Thomas Machir Harrison, 97, formerly of Front Royal, Virginia passed away peacefully on Monday, March 3, 2025, in Landrum, South Carolina.

Thomas Machir Harrison

Mr. Harrison was born on February 6, 1928, in Front Royal, Virginia to the late Thomas Isaac and Sarah Alma Machir Harrison.  He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years Irene Maybelle Williams Harrison of Huntly, Virginia and his sister Sally Harrison Chappell of Culpeper, Virginia.

Tom was a lifelong, avid reader who had an unbridled curiosity about life and was passionate in his pursuit of knowledge in new and diverse subjects. He also enjoyed listening to classical music, reciting poetry, watching educational programs, and crafting furniture and other items in his wood-working shop.

Prior to a professional career in banking, he was proud to have attended the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia, as a member of the class of 1950 “B” after graduating from Randolph Military Academy in Front Royal, Virginia.  He had many fond stories about his experiences at both institutions that he liked to share.

Surviving are four children, Thomas Lawrence Harrison (Lorna) of Elk Creek, Virginia, Susan Machir Harrison Erickson (Keith) of Moneta, Virginia, Nancy Gordon Harrison Carroll (Jim) of Greer, South Carolina and Barry Bradley Harrison (Kimberly) of Front Royal, Virginia; 7 grandchildren, Devin, Erica, Ashley, Julie, Allison, Lindsay, and Alexander; 2 great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Emeline; and a sister, Harriett Harrison Pitts of Charlotte, North Carolina.

A private memorial ceremony is planned for a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to a local hospice, educational program, or library of your choice.
