Tragic Crash on I-66 Claims One Life, Roads Reopen After Fiery Wreck

Published

on

A fatal crash on Interstate 66 in Warren County has left one person dead and caused major disruptions earlier today. At 1:02 p.m., Virginia State Police responded to the scene of a two-vehicle collision involving a westbound passenger vehicle and a tractor-trailer at the 6-mile marker on I-66.

The impact of the collision forced the tractor-trailer off the highway, where it came to a stop on Route 522 and quickly caught fire. Emergency crews and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) immediately shut down the westbound lanes of I-66 and the northbound portion of Route 522 to manage the situation and direct traffic to detours.

After nearly two hours of road closures, VDOT confirmed that I-66 reopened at 3:07 p.m. However, one fatality has been reported as a result of the crash. Further details about the victim and the cause of the crash have not yet been released, as the investigation remains ongoing.

First responders, including firefighters, worked quickly to extinguish the blaze, and cleanup efforts are expected to continue as authorities piece together the events leading up to the crash.

Motorists in the area are urged to remain cautious and follow any detours or warnings as the roads may still be congested in the afternoon.
