Data Breaches Affect More Than a Billion People This Year—So Far

Published

on

The year isn’t over yet, but data breaches have already affected over a billion people in 2024. Among these breaches, the RockYou2024 incident appears to be the largest-ever compilation of stolen passwords, with approximately ten billion passwords exposed, according to Cybernews.

A Growing Problem

While cybersecurity researchers assure that much of the data in the RockYou2024 breach was junk and useless to hackers, according to PCMag, other breaches have had serious implications. During the first half of this year, over a billion people had their passwords and other personal information compromised. This is a staggering increase of 409 percent compared to the 182.65 million affected in the first half of 2023, according to USA Today.

Most of these breaches were linked to a few major incidents, including those at Ticketmaster and Advance Auto Parts. As information about other significant hacks—like the one involving Change Healthcare—comes to light, the number of affected individuals will likely increase even further.

Increasing Focus on Driver’s License Numbers

According to Experian, cybercriminals are becoming more interested in obtaining stolen driver’s license numbers, which are valuable for identity theft and financial fraud. This trend highlights the growing sophistication and scope of cyberattacks targeting personal data.

Tips to Protect Yourself from Hackers

Given the increasing number of data breaches, taking steps to protect yourself online is more important than ever. Here are some tips:

  1. Use Multi-Factor Authentication: This adds a second layer of protection, often involving a text message or email verification in addition to your password.
  2. Shop Securely: Avoid buying from websites that do not use secure and established payment methods. Credit cards and platforms like PayPal offer dispute resolution services that can help protect you from financial losses.
  3. Be Cautious with Links and Downloads: Do not open links or download files from unfamiliar sources. Avoid clicking on it if you aren’t expecting it and don’t know the sender.
  4. Create Strong, Unique Passphrases: Use unique passphrases for every account that are at least 12 characters long and include numbers and special characters. Avoid reusing passwords across multiple accounts.

Stay Vigilant and Protect Your Data

With data breaches becoming more frequent and severe, it is essential to remain vigilant and proactive about online security. Following these tips can reduce the risk of becoming a victim and better protect your personal information.
