Sky Meadows Hosts Guided Hikes for Kids During Spring Break Week

Published

on

Families looking for an educational outdoor escape this spring break can lace up their hiking boots and head to Sky Meadows State Park for Footsteps Through the Forest, a special day of guided nature hikes on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event is part of the park’s Spring Break Week celebration and features ranger-led hikes designed especially for children and their families.

The day includes two types of hikes, both offered at 10:00 a.m. and again at 1:00 p.m., giving families flexibility to plan their visit. Each hike is easy in difficulty, lasts about 90 minutes, and focuses on connecting kids with nature in age-appropriate and engaging ways.

The Little Explorers’ Nature Quest is perfect for elementary-aged children. Led by Sky Meadows’ interpretive rangers, this adventure starts at Mary’s Shelter in the Picnic Area and invites young hikers to use their senses, imaginations, and curiosity to learn about the natural world around them. Activities may include tracking wildlife signs, exploring plants up close, and learning how different animals call the forest home.

For slightly older kids, the Woodland Wonders Tree Hike caters to middle school-aged explorers and their families. Beginning at the Log Cabin in the Historic Area, this guided walk introduces participants to the park’s native trees, how to identify them, and why they’re important to local ecosystems. Rangers will highlight species like oaks, hickories, and maples while explaining how these trees support everything from insects to birds.

Registration is not required, but it is strongly encouraged to ensure space is available. Visitors can register online in advance for either time slot of the Woodland Wonders Tree Hike at Eventbrite.

There are no additional fees for participating in the hikes—just the park’s standard $10 parking fee. Families are advised to wear sturdy shoes, bring water, and dress for the weather to make the most of their outdoor experience.

Sky Meadows State Park is located at 11012 Edmonds Lane in Delaplane, Virginia. Known for its rolling meadows, forest trails, and interactive programs, the park is a popular spot for families, hikers, and nature lovers year-round. For more information, call 540-592-3556 or email SkyMeadows@dcr.virginia.gov. You can also visit the park’s website at www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/sky-meadows.

“Footsteps Through the Forest” offers kids a memorable and meaningful way to spend part of their spring break—learning, playing, and walking among the trees.
