Virginia Now Hiring Conservation Police Officers for 2026 Academy

The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is now accepting applications for the 15th Conservation Police Training Academy, with training set to begin in February 2026. Applications will be accepted through July 11, giving interested candidates just a few weeks to take the first step toward a career in wildlife law enforcement.

DWR Conservation Police Officers (CPOs) play a vital role in protecting Virginia’s natural resources while ensuring public safety across the state’s waterways, forests, and recreational lands. From patrolling in boats and trucks to conducting complex investigations, no two days in the field are alike.

Applicants don’t need to be seasoned officers to apply, but they must be ready for a serious commitment to public service. Once selected, recruits will enter a 30-week Basic Training Program held in Henrico, Virginia. This program is required even for certified officers and covers law enforcement techniques, wildlife management, emergency response, and more. Graduation is expected by late August or early September 2026.

New officers begin with a salary of $54,106. After successfully completing the probationary period, they receive an immediate 10% raise. The department’s Career Progression Program also offers additional pay increases over time based on experience and performance.

The role of a Conservation Police Officer is a sworn law enforcement position with full police authority across the Commonwealth. CPOs are often first on the scene for emergency calls in remote areas. In addition to enforcing fishing, hunting, and boating laws, they respond to criminal incidents, conduct search and rescue operations, and engage with the public during regular patrols.

Strong communication, sound judgment, and professionalism are key traits for success in the field. Officers often interact with hunters, anglers, boaters, and other outdoor enthusiasts, making public outreach and education an important part of the job.

Retirement and benefits are competitive. Officers are enrolled in the Virginia Law Officers’ Retirement System (VaLORS) Plan 2. They can retire with full benefits at age 60 with five years of service or at age 50 with 25 years of service. Additional benefits include access to the Commonwealth of Virginia 457 Deferred Compensation Plan and the Virginia Cash Match Plan 401(a).
