Royal Cinemas Set to Reopen After Months of Repairs Following January Fire

Published

on

After nearly five months of repairs and restoration work, Royal Cinemas is ready to welcome moviegoers back to downtown Front Royal this weekend.

The theater will reopen on Friday, June 19th, following a January electrical fire that forced the longtime Main Street business to close temporarily. Owner Rick Novak said the road back has been challenging, but the community’s support, along with the efforts of staff, contractors, and first responders, helped make reopening possible.

“Nobody got hurt,” Novak said while reflecting on the Jan. 18 fire that started inside a wall near the upstairs projection room. Firefighters quickly responded and prevented the damage from spreading further through the historic downtown block.

Now, after months of cleanup, repairs, and inspections, two of the theater’s three auditoriums are ready for audiences once again.

Royal Cinemas plans to reopen with a lineup of major releases, including “Toy Story 5” and “Devil Wears Prada 2,” with additional summer movies arriving in the coming weeks. Novak said he hopes the community will come out, enjoy a movie, and help support the theater as it gets fully back on its feet.

The reopening marks an important moment for downtown Front Royal, where Royal Cinemas has long served as a gathering place for families, friends and date nights.

“We haven’t been open, and it may not be exactly right this weekend, but it’s going to be close,” Novak said.

The theater’s concession stand is stocked, the projectors are running, and the staff has returned to prepare for opening weekend. Novak said employees returned eager to help welcome customers back through the doors.

While repairs continue in one auditorium, Novak said the theater is already looking ahead. Plans are in place to replace seating later this year after years of heavy sanitizing during the pandemic wore down the material on many seats.

The neighboring restaurant next to the theater is also working toward reopening after suffering water damage during firefighting efforts.

For Novak, reopening is about more than movies. It is about bringing people back together downtown and restoring a local business that has become part of the community’s routine.

Residents can purchase tickets online through the Royal Cinemas website or app.
