One Dead in Guard Hill Road Incident, Fire Erupts at Royal Cinemas in Unrelated Emergency

Published

on

Sunday evening brought two major emergency events just minutes apart, stretching local resources and drawing aid from neighboring jurisdictions.

At approximately 7:10 p.m. on January 18, Warren County Fire and Rescue (WCFR) was dispatched to the 3900 block of Guard Hill Road, where a man was reported trapped under a pickup truck. When first responders arrived, they found that the truck had rolled about 30 feet down a steep embankment, coming to rest with one male pinned beneath.

The paramedic from Medic 10 (North Warren) assessed the man, who was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

Due to the challenging terrain, the operation shifted from rescue to recovery. WCFR units worked with Shenandoah Towing, using a technical rope system and specialized equipment to stabilize and recover the vehicle and victim. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending family notification.

Responding units included Medic 10, Rescue Squad 1 (Front Royal), and Battalion Chief 1.

Second Emergency at Royal Cinemas

Just 13 minutes later, while personnel were still working at the Guard Hill Road scene, WCFR was dispatched to a reported structure fire at Royal Cinemas, located at 117 East Main Street in downtown Front Royal.

At the scene of Sunday evening’s fire call to Royal Cinemas, one can see the Warren County Fire & Rescue extension ladder extended to the top of the movie theater’s roof and upper floors. Medic 4, initially enroute to assist at the earlier call, diverted to Station 1 to support fire suppression efforts. The first fire unit to arrive reported visible smoke coming from the building’s roof, and a Front Royal Police officer confirmed a working fire inside the theater.

Given the building’s structural complexity and its proximity to other businesses, fire officials quickly escalated the incident to a second alarm.

According to officials, crews contained the fire to the second-floor projection room, preventing major spread. While there was minor extension into nearby wall and roof spaces, firefighters stopped the blaze before it could damage the main theater area or adjoining businesses. A nearby restaurant sustained minor smoke damage.

Royal Cinemas owner Rick Novak was present at the scene and confirmed with the media that no injuries occurred, disputing a rumor circulating online about a fatality in the theater fire.

Emergency Resources Maxed Out

The back-to-back incidents consumed all available on-duty fire and rescue crews in Warren County, triggering automatic and mutual aid responses from neighboring areas, including Stephens City, Middletown, Marshall, Flint Hill, and Strasburg.

The county entered a temporary “no units available” status as fire-rescue personnel operated for approximately three hours across both scenes.

Responding units for the cinema fire included:

First Alarm:

  • Rescue Engine 2 (Rivermont)
  • Rescue Engine 3 (South Warren)
  • Rescue Engine 5 (Shenandoah Shores)
  • Rescue Engine 9 (Chester Gap)
  • Engine 6 (Shenandoah Farms)
  • Truck 1 (Front Royal)
  • Ambulance 2 (Rivermont)
  • Medic 8 (Fortsmouth)
  • Battalion Chief 1
  • Chief 101

Second Alarm Additions:

  • Engine 9B (Chester Gap)
  • Wagon 11 (Stephens City)
  • Rescue Engine 12 (Middletown)
  • Wagon 1103 (Marshall)
  • Engine 1401 (Washington)
  • Engine 1404 (Flint Hill)
  • Truck 51 (Strasburg)
  • Medic 9 (Chester Gap)

A Demanding Night for First Responders

Fire and rescue personnel worked both emergencies under heavy pressure, balancing a technical recovery operation with a structure fire in one of downtown Front Royal’s historic buildings. Despite resource constraints, crews managed to contain the theater fire and safely recover the individual involved in the Guard Hill Road incident.

Officials have not announced whether investigations into either incident are ongoing. No additional injuries were reported in either event.
