Ducks, Flowers, and Fun: Redbud Festival Returns to Browntown

Published

on

The village of Browntown will welcome spring with a beloved local tradition as the annual Redbud Festival returns on Saturday, April 18.

Hosted by the Browntown Community Center Association, the event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the heart of the historic village, drawing residents and visitors to celebrate the blooming redbud trees that color the Gooney Valley each year.

The festival serves as a key fundraiser for the Browntown Community Center, housed in a restored early-1900s schoolhouse, and highlights the strong sense of community that defines the area.

Organizers say the day will offer something for all ages. One of the most popular attractions is the Gooney Creek Duck Race, set for 1 p.m., where hundreds of plastic ducks will float downstream as spectators cheer from the banks. Tickets are $5, and winners receive cash prizes.

An antique and classic car show will also take place near the Community Center and the Dr. Updike Museum, featuring vintage vehicles from across the region. Throughout the day, live music and entertainment will fill the outdoor stage, while local artisans showcase handmade crafts and goods.

Visitors can also explore the Dr. Updike Museum to learn more about the history of the Gooney Valley, or take home a piece of the season from the spring plant sale, which will include redbud saplings and other garden favorites.

“The Redbud Festival is a fun way to meet and greet your neighbors and friends,” said Martha Buracker, president of the Browntown Community Center Association.

Organizers also note that April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month, and the festival offers a chance to recognize the many volunteers who help bring the event to life.

Guests will find plenty to eat, including home-cooked meals from the Community Center kitchen, offerings from the Express Grill, and a bake sale featuring pies and treats from local bakers.

Admission to the festival is free, with proceeds from activities and sales supporting the Community Center’s upkeep and operations.

The event will take place at 96 Browntown Road, about eight miles off Route 340 south of Front Royal.

With spring in full bloom and a full day of activities planned, the Redbud Festival continues to be a highlight of the season in Browntown.
