Road Rage Shooting Leads to Arrest, Multiple Felony Charges in Frederick County

on

A reported road rage incident involving gunfire led to an arrest Tuesday after authorities tracked a suspect to a Frederick County campground.

According to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began on April 28 when a motorist called 911 to report that his vehicle had been shot at while traveling south on Route 37 near North Frederick Pike.

The victim told deputies that a white pickup truck had been driving aggressively from Martinsburg Pike to the Route 522 off-ramp. The suspect then slowed down and fired at the victim before continuing south, while the victim pulled over and contacted authorities.

The suspect vehicle was described as a newer model GMC pickup with dark-tinted windows, chrome rims, and a Tennessee license plate.

Deputies began searching the area and alerted surrounding jurisdictions. Information later pointed officers to the Candy Hill Campground off Route 50 west. There, deputies located a truck matching the description parked at a campsite. Surveillance footage confirmed the vehicle arrived shortly after the 911 call reporting shots fired.

Authorities established a perimeter and obtained search warrants. At about 1:08 p.m., members of the Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team executed a search at the campsite and took the registered owner, Matthew Joseph Foyt, into custody without incident.

Investigators said a black handgun was found in plain view inside the vehicle, along with two spent shell casings. Additional ammunition and Schedule I and II narcotics were also recovered from the camper.

Foyt was arrested after a brief interview in which he confirmed being in the area at the time of the incident before invoking his right to remain silent.

He was transported to a regional detention facility and now faces a series of charges, including multiple felonies. Among them are the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle, discharging a firearm on public property near a school, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm while in possession of Schedule I or II drugs, and possession of narcotics.

Additional charges include attempted malicious wounding, vandalism involving damage to property, and reckless handling of a firearm.

Authorities have not released further details about the victim’s condition. The investigation remains ongoing.
