Test Your Balance Before the Job Tests It for You

Published

on

Balance is one of the easiest parts of physical fitness to overlook — until it becomes a problem.

For workers who climb ladders, carry tools, walk uneven ground, step in and out of trucks, or spend long hours on their feet, balance plays a major role in injury prevention. Poor balance increases the risk of falls, ankle injuries, knee problems, and even back strain.

A simple at-home test can give you a quick snapshot of your stability.

Stand on one foot with your arms relaxed at your sides and your eyes open. Try not to grab onto anything for support.

A healthy adult under age 50 should generally be able to hold the position for at least 30 seconds on each leg.

If you struggle to reach 20 seconds, it may signal weakness, reduced coordination, or stability issues that deserve attention.

Balance often declines gradually with age, inactivity, previous injuries, or lack of core strength. Workers recovering from ankle sprains, knee injuries, or back problems may notice it first.

The good news is that balance can usually be improved with simple exercises:

  • Standing on one foot while brushing your teeth
  • Walking heel-to-toe
  • Light core exercises
  • Leg strengthening routines
  • Stretching and mobility work

For older adults, balance training is especially important because falls remain a leading cause of serious injury.

If balancing on one foot causes dizziness, sharp pain, or repeated instability, it may be worth discussing with a doctor or physical therapist.

Sometimes the body gives warning signs long before a serious fall happens.
