Skyline High School graduate Jean Fallon O’Malley received a $2500 Lyle B. Wright Scholarship from American Municipal Power (AMP) Director of Marketing Harry Phillips during the May 14 Front Royal Town Council meeting.

O’Malley plans to major in Biochemistry at the College of William & Mary. She was accompanied by mom Ashley O’Malley at the presentation.
The scholarship is one of four recently awarded from 30 applicants. The scholarships, named for a public power advocate, are awarded to family members of the AMP Municipal Power Cooperative’s membership communities.

Founded in 1971 and based in Ohio, the AMP has expanded to 134 member communities in nine states. Town officials credit membership in the AMP municipal community for maintaining its standing in recent years as one of, if not the lowest priced municipal energy providers in Virginia.
Those savings are realized by group power purchases and reduced transmission fees between member community energy grids.

Front Royal is one of five AMP members in Virginia, along with Bedford, Danville, Martinsville and Richlands. Ohio has the most members with 84. In addition to Virginia, other member states include Pennsylvania, Michigan, West Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, Indiana and Delaware.
