Front Royal Dentist Honored for National Contributions to Homeopathy Education

A long-time local dentist with deep ties to the Shenandoah Valley has earned one of the highest honors from the National Center for Homeopathy (NCH) for his decades-long work in teaching and promoting homeopathy in the dental field.

Dr. Craig Zunka

Dr. Craig Zunka, DDS of Front Royal, was recently named the recipient of the Maesimund B. Panos, MD Homeopathy Education Award by NCH. The award is given to individuals who have made a significant impact on homeopathy education in North America, particularly among healthcare professionals.

The award, established just a few years ago, honors the legacy of Dr. Maesimund Panos, one of NCH’s founders. Dr. Panos was known for her groundbreaking work in educating both the public and medical professionals about homeopathy. She helped launch NCH in 1974 and wrote the widely read book Homeopathic Medicine at Home in 1980.

“Dr. Zunka exemplifies the dedication to education and leadership that Dr. Panos modeled throughout her career,” said Dr. Lori Grossman, President of the National Center for Homeopathy, during the award presentation. “His work has made a lasting difference in how homeopathy is understood and applied in the field of dentistry.”

Dr. Zunka’s journey in homeopathy began decades ago when he attended an NCH medical course. At that event, he met Dr. Panos, who personally took his case and treated him using classical homeopathic methods. That experience sparked a lifelong commitment to homeopathy, leading Dr. Zunka to help shape how homeopathy is taught and used in dental care today.

Starting in the late 1980s, Dr. Zunka co-led a specialized course in dental homeopathy that ran alongside NCH’s medical training programs. Over time, he helped expand and relocate the course to make it more accessible to dentists across the country. Since the passing of his co-instructor, Dr. Harris Kimbrell, Dr. Zunka has continued to teach the course on his own.

Today, Dr. Zunka is widely recognized as a pioneer in dental homeopathy, a field that blends natural remedies with conventional dental care. He is involved in multiple holistic dentistry organizations and is a regular speaker and educator in the homeopathic and dental communities.

In addition to his contributions to education, Dr. Zunka has built a respected private dental practice in Front Royal, where he integrates homeopathy, nutrition, and other holistic approaches into patient care. His professional background includes more than 12,000 hours of continuing education in areas such as restorative dentistry, TMJ dysfunction, and dento-cranial manipulation.

He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Homeopathy in Dentistry and holds fellowships and memberships in numerous professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, the Holistic Dental Association, and the Cranial Academy of the American Academy of Osteopathy.

Outside of his practice, Dr. Zunka is deeply involved in his community. He has volunteered with the Boy Scouts for over 50 years and currently serves as Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 52 in Front Royal. He is an Eagle Scout and recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, scouting’s highest honor for adult leaders. In 2017, he was named Distinguished Citizen of the Year.

Dr. Zunka and his wife, JoEllen, live in Front Royal near the northern entrance to Skyline Drive. They enjoy the outdoors, travel, photography, and music. Dr. Zunka plays bass fiddle in a local bluegrass band, Whiskey Creek, and grows Christmas trees for his scout troop’s annual fundraiser.

The NCH described Dr. Zunka’s decades of leadership as vital to expanding awareness and understanding of how homeopathy can support patient care in dentistry. His work continues to inspire a new generation of healthcare professionals to consider homeopathy as part of holistic healing.

“It’s an honor to receive this award,” Dr. Zunka said at the ceremony. “Homeopathy has been a powerful tool in my practice and in my life, and I’ll continue to teach it as long as I can.”
