Legacy Christian Academy: A Decade of Faith and Education

Published

on

Legacy Christian Academy, nestled in Stephens City, Virginia, has been shaping young minds for over a decade, providing a nurturing environment where faith and education intersect. Established by a group of dedicated parents, this non-denominational Christian school serves over 220 students, ranging from preschool (K4) through 12th grade. Led by Principal Mindy Toler, Director of Admissions  & Marketing Jaclyn Ryan, and Toby Allanson, Vice Principal, the school offers a blend of academic excellence and Christian values that appeal to families seeking a more personalized and spiritually focused educational experience.

A School Rooted in Faith

Legacy Christian Academy stands out in the community for its commitment to integrating Christian teachings into everyday education. Mindy Toler, a veteran of public education, describes the school as the best place she’s ever worked. “We’re not perfect because we’re a bunch of humans in a building,” she says with a laugh, “but we have a great culture, a great place, and people love being here.”

The school’s mission is simple but profound: students are educated, loved, cared for, and pointed toward Jesus. Every day, students engage in Bible classes that help build a solid spiritual foundation, a key element differentiating the academy from other private schools. Jaclyn Ryan shared a personal testament to the impact of this faith-centered education. “My son started in kindergarten here, and now he’s in third grade and thriving. His teachers are phenomenal, and he’s well-rounded academically, socially, and biblically.”

Small Classes, Big Impact

A hallmark of Legacy Christian Academy is its small class sizes, a stark contrast to many public schools. With an average of 14 to 20 students per class, teachers can offer individual attention and tailor instruction to meet each child’s specific needs. “Classroom size makes a huge difference,” says Toler. “When you have 30 kids in a class, it’s challenging to meet the needs of every student. But with a smaller class, we know our students, their strengths, and where they need help, and we can support them in meaningful ways.”

This individualized approach extends beyond academics. The school emphasizes building healthy relationships between teachers and students, fostering an environment where students feel known and supported educationally and emotionally.

A Community Built on Shared Values

While Legacy Christian Academy is a Christian school, its appeal goes beyond any one denomination. “We have families from all different Christian backgrounds,” says Ryan. “What unites us is a shared love for God, and that common foundation makes a huge difference in building a strong school community.”

The close-knit nature of the school allows families to form deep connections, with many parents and students remaining at the academy for years. Word of mouth remains one of the most effective ways the school grows its enrollment, as families share their positive experiences with others.

Spreading the Word

While word of mouth plays a significant role, the school always seeks new ways to connect with the community. One such effort is their upcoming Trunk or Treat event, where families will receive goodie bags filled with information about the school. Ryan explains, “Many people don’t realize we’re here or offer education through 12th grade. We also want people to know it’s more affordable than they think.”

In addition to Trunk or Treat, the school recently participated in the Celebrate Kids Day in Warren County, setting up a booth with games and prizes to engage local families. Events like these help the academy spread awareness about its offerings and unique approach to education.

Academic Excellence

Academically, Legacy Christian Academy strives for excellence. The school boasts impressive test scores, with many students performing above grade level compared to their public school peers. “Our students, on average, are at least a year ahead,” says Toler. Early literacy is a key focus, with kindergarten students reading proficiently by the time they graduate from the program.

The school’s curriculum is designed to challenge students while allowing for individual growth. However, the school balances academic rigor with the understanding that students need to develop socially at their own pace.

Looking Ahead

As the school continues to grow, the focus remains on ensuring it does so in alignment with God’s timing. “We want to grow, but we want to grow the way God wants us to,” says Toler. This growth mindset is reflected in the school’s plans, including their current fundraising efforts. One of the biggest fundraisers this year is the calendar campaign, where students, staff, and parents are each encouraged to fill a calendar by asking for donations—the dollar equivalent for October’s selected day(s). For example, October 24 equates to $24 donated. The goal is to raise $100,000, directly benefiting the school.

The school also has a busy fall schedule, with events like the annual Fall Festival and a Holiday Bazaar in November, offering craft vendors and more for the community to enjoy.

A School for the Whole Family

Legacy Christian Academy is more than just a school; it’s a family. The school offers before- and after-care programs to accommodate parents’ schedules. It even operates a bus route that picks up students from the Riverton area in Warren County, making it easier for families in surrounding areas to enroll.

With its strong academic programs, faith-based curriculum, and close-knit community, Legacy Christian Academy is truly a special place. As the school enters its next decade, it remains committed to providing an environment where students can grow intellectually, socially, and spiritually, all while being loved and supported every step of the way.

Legacy Christian Academy is at 5933 Valley Pike, Stephens City, VA 22655.
