Moving Day: Tips for Keeping Your Pet Comfortable
Moving can be stressful for everyone in the family, including pets. Dogs, cats, and small animals rely on familiar smells, steady routines, and trusted people to feel safe. When boxes, noise, and strangers suddenly fill the home, pets can become nervous or confused.
A little planning can make the move easier for them.
In the days before moving day, try to keep your pet’s routine as normal as possible. Feed them at the usual times, continue regular walks and play sessions, and keep their favorite toys, blankets, or beds nearby. These familiar items can provide comfort while the rest of the home changes around them.
For a long-distance move, contact your veterinarian at least three weeks ahead of time. Your vet can offer travel advice, update vaccines if needed, and discuss whether calming products or medication may be helpful.
On moving day, safety should be the top priority. Set up a quiet, secure space for your pet in a closed room, crate, or carrier, away from loud noises, open doors, and heavy foot traffic. Movers going in and out can frighten pets and increase the chance of escape. When possible, ask a trusted friend, family member, or pet daycare to care for your pet until the move is finished.
Once you arrive at your new home, set up your pet’s area first. Place their bed, food, water, and toys in one calm room. Let them explore slowly, one space at a time.
With patience and preparation, you can help your pet feel safe before, during, and after moving day.
