Samuel’s Public Library Wins Big: Library, Friends Group, and Trustee of the Year Awards

Samuel’s Public Library in Front Royal celebrates prestigious awards from the Virginia Library Association, including Library of the Year, Friends Group of the Year, and Trustee of the Year. These recognitions highlight the outstanding service and dedication of the library staff, volunteers, and community supporters.

Melody Hotek, President of the Library Board of Trustees, expressed her excitement over the awards, noting that it’s an honor to be acknowledged by an external organization. “When other people outside, completely outside the organization, recognize the great things you do, it does make you feel good,” Hotek shared. The awards were community-nominated, and the Virginia Library Association selected the winners from nearly 400 libraries across Virginia.

Chris Estes, President of the Friends of Samuel’s Library (FOSL), explained that the Friends Group is an independent nonprofit supporting the library through fundraising and volunteer work. The Friends of Samuel’s Library also play a vital role in the success of events like the upcoming book sale, which takes place from September 26 to September 30. “The Friends Group raises money, and we volunteer in various ways to do things. We have members whose fees and donations are our lifeblood,” said Estes.

What’s Coming Up at Samuel’s Public Library?

The library’s celebration of these awards comes at a busy time, with several exciting events on the horizon. This Saturday, Samuel’s Public Library will host Sammicon, a day-long celebration from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. featuring a range of activities for all ages. A highlight will be a sneak peek at the new Studio 330 Memory Lab and Makerspace, which will soon open to the public and offer services like VHS-to-digital conversion and more.

Erin Rooney, the new library director, is enthusiastic about the future. “We have a wonderful team, and we’re blessed to serve a fantastic community,” Rooney said. The library continues to grow, recently receiving new equipment like a sound booth, which will provide a dedicated space for audio and video recording projects.

The Friends Group’s annual book sale is another big event to look forward to. From September 26 to 30, thousands of books will be on sale, mostly donated by community members. The sale starts with a members-only night on September 26, but new members can join at the door.

Supporting a Thriving Community Hub

The Samuel’s Public Library is more than just a place to borrow books; it’s a vibrant community hub offering programs, volunteer opportunities, and special events that unite people. The awards highlight the library’s vital role in the community and reflect the hard work of its dedicated staff, trustees, and volunteers.

Melody Hotek, who also received the Trustee of the Year award, credits the success to the community’s ongoing support. “We have a magnificent board that fills all kinds of skill sets. It does take a village,” she said, acknowledging the efforts of the many volunteers and board members who contribute to the library’s mission.

Join the Celebration

There’s never been a better time to get involved with Samuel’s Public Library! Whether attending Sammicon, joining the Friends Group, or volunteering, the library offers plenty of ways for community members to contribute and connect. Rooney says, “We’re just very grateful for all the community does for us, and we’re excited about what’s next!”

Don’t miss out on the fun events this September, and support your award-winning library in continuing to serve as a community pillar.
