Beach Bag Essentials for the Whole Family

Published

on

Memorial Day is often seen as the unofficial start of summer—and that means it’s finally time for fun in the sun at the beach, lake, pool, or swimming hole. But before you head out, make sure you’ve packed the right gear. A well-prepared beach bag can make the difference between a relaxing day and one full of sunburns, spills, and stress.

The first thing you need is a sturdy beach bag, bin, or wagon. Look for one that’s lightweight, easy to carry, and resistant to water and dirt. Some families use plastic storage bins with sealing lids to keep everything dry and organized. If you’re bringing bigger items like beach chairs or umbrellas, a collapsible wagon can be a lifesaver for the walk from the car to the shore.

Here’s what to pack to keep the entire family safe, happy, and ready to enjoy the day:

Swimsuits and Footwear
Make sure everyone has a swimsuit that fits well and dries quickly. When it comes to shoes, consider more than just flip-flops. Water shoes or athletic-style sandals can protect your feet from sharp rocks, hot sand, or slippery docks.

Sun Protection
Don’t take chances with the sun. Toss any expired sunscreen and stock up on new bottles. Adults should use about a shot glass full of sunscreen per application and reapply every 80 minutes, especially after swimming or sweating. Wide-brimmed hats, UV-protective sunglasses, and lightweight cover-ups offer extra protection.

Towels, Blankets, and Clothing
Pack plenty of towels for drying off and at least one large beach blanket for relaxing on the sand. Don’t forget a change of clothes for each person—no one likes a soggy ride home.

Waterproof Phone Pouch
Keep your phone safe from splashes, sand, and sunscreen smudges. A waterproof pouch lets you take photos, check the time, or call for help without risking water damage.

Food and Drinks
Hydration is key on hot days. Fill up large reusable water bottles for every family member. Add some simple snacks like fruit, granola bars, or crackers to keep everyone energized. Be sure to keep perishable items in a cooler if you plan to stay a while.

Beach Cupholders
These handy accessories help keep drinks upright and sand-free. Some versions stake into the ground, while others clip onto beach chairs.

With just a bit of planning, your beach day can be smooth, safe, and sun-soaked in all the right ways. Whether you’re heading out for a full vacation or a quick afternoon by the water, a well-packed bag means more time relaxing—and less time running back to the car for what you forgot.
