Explore Nature, History, and Hands-On Fun at Strasburg Museum’s Family Day

Looking for a fun and educational way to spend a Saturday with the kids or grandkids? Head to the Strasburg Museum on Saturday, June 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a special family-focused day filled with hands-on activities, local history, and river education. The best part? Located at 440 East King Street in Strasburg, the museum is celebrating more than 250 years of local life and history in the Shenandoah Valley. Housed in a former railroad depot, the museum has been a National Historic Landmark since 1970. On this special Saturday, the museum is partnering with the Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River to bring the outdoors indoors—and give families an up-close look at the natural world that surrounds them.

Throughout the day, children and adults can explore the connections between the region’s rivers, trees, animals, and people. The Friends of the North Fork will set up ongoing interactive stations, including a Watershed Model and a Stream Table, to show how water flows through our environment and how pollution can affect everything downstream.

The activities are designed to make learning fun and engaging for all ages. Children will have the chance to get hands-on with water-based demonstrations that spark curiosity and understanding, while adults can also pick up useful tips on how to better care for the local river and environment.

Alongside the educational stations, guests will be able to examine detailed maps of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, its many connecting streams, and the larger watershed that feeds into it. Visitors will learn how everyday actions in backyards and neighborhoods can impact river health—and what they can do to help protect it.

The event offers a great opportunity for families to discover Strasburg’s natural beauty and rich history in one visit. While kids enjoy the stream table or identify local wildlife, grown-ups can browse the museum’s exhibits, which showcase the area’s past, from Civil War artifacts to antique pottery and railroad memorabilia.
