Winchester PD: K-9 Officer Kota passes

Published

on

Koda and his handler, Master Officer Brittany Kotynski-Neer served as Grand Marshals of the Apple Blossom Festival in 2014, just weeks after Koda was injured falling through an attic floor while tracking B&E suspects.

One of Winchester’s most beloved public servants, K-9 Kota,  died on Monday.

K-9 Kota’s handler, Master Officer Brittany Kotynski-Neer issued the following written statement Monday evening: “It is with a heavy heart I post this: our beloved Kota bear crossed Rainbow Bridge this morning. Your thoughts and prayers have always been felt and appreciated. We are asking for them again as our family mourns losing a piece of our hearts. Kota had some final words for all of his supporters but I need some time to collect myself before passing them along. Thank you as always for the support.”

Kota became a member of the Winchester Police Department in 2009, and made headlines five years later, when he fell through the floor of an attic while tracking two breaking and entering suspects on January 3, 2014. Nine months, later, Kota was known the world over. The story of the brave dog who was injured helping apprehend suspects made him a beloved figure, especially with children.

Kotynski-Neer said many were inspired by Kota’s healing progress but it was their encouragement that helped her too.

Kota turned 10 years old on Sept. 29, 2017.
