From Bricks to a Bonded Community: Front Royal LUG Builds Something Bigger

What started as a spark of inspiration at the Samuels Public Library has grown into a thriving community of brick-building enthusiasts, creatives, and friends. The Front Royal LEGO Users Group (LUG), now more than a year old, has steadily assembled a following of passionate Adult Fans of LEGO (AFOLs) who gather monthly to share ideas, build together, and show off their creations at regional conventions.

At this year’s Samicon 2025, the LUG returned with a standout exhibit that featured a customized Appalachian Trail (AT) module, showcasing Front Royal as part of a collaborative international project. Complete with a river that paid homage to the town’s identity as Virginia’s canoe capital, the exhibit drew crowds, compliments, and a few well-deserved “wows.”

“Our AT Module Standard invites other LUGs to join in creating a shared trail system—each piece unique, but all connected,” said Lewis Moten, the group’s organizer. “This year, we wanted our section to highlight Front Royal in a way that was both artistic and recognizable.”

The display was more than a collection of carefully arranged bricks. It was a symbol of how far the group has come.

Building a Group from the Ground Up

In its early days, the Front Royal LUG was more concept than club. The idea took shape in 2024, fueled by local interest and supported by free resources like a Facebook group, Discord server, and WordPress blog. There were no dues, no organizational structure, and no permanent home—just a shared love of LEGO and a desire to connect.

The group’s first meeting took place at Samuels Public Library, but an early effort to rotate through other venues proved difficult. Locations such as the Community Center, Play Favorites, Blue Ridge Arts Council, and Culpeper Library were generous in spirit but inconsistent in availability, cost, or accessibility. The rotating model made meetings unpredictable and, eventually, unsustainable.

Enter Evan Mulloy, a core member with experience in other regional LUGs and the group’s Discord administrator. “We needed consistency,” he said. “The library had the space, the accessibility, and the reliability we were missing.”

The group returned to Samuels Public Library, this time with a regular schedule — the second-to-last Saturday of each month — and the stability has paid off. Though the meetings typically attract between three to six members, the group’s online presence and reach have continued to grow. They now have active members, contributors, and fans across multiple platforms, all engaged in sharing ideas and celebrating the joy of building.

No Dues, No Politics, Just Bricks

Unlike larger, formally chartered LUGs, Front Royal’s group runs entirely on free digital platforms, word of mouth, and shared enthusiasm. There are no officers, no finances, and no overhead — just a grassroots commitment to making the group accessible to all.

“The idea is to keep it simple and welcoming,” said Moten. “People don’t need to pay to be part of this. They just need to love LEGO and want to share that love with others.”

That spirit of openness also drives the group’s participation in larger conventions, like BrickFair at the Dulles Expo Center, where members showcase collaborative MOCs (My Own Creations). These events allow the LUG to represent Front Royal on a much larger stage — bringing attention not just to their own builds, but to the community that supports them.

Of course, participating in conventions and exhibits means dealing with logistics, especially when it comes to protecting delicate creations. Displays must be indoors, supervised, and ideally behind glass or stanchions to prevent damage. These requirements haven’t slowed the group down, but they do shape which events are feasible.

A Warm Invitation to the Community

The Front Royal LUG is more than happy to grow at its own pace. While large, busy events are exciting, it’s the monthly meetings — where members trade minifigs, talk techniques, and build for fun — that remain the heart of the group.
