Study Suggests Wi-Fi Signals Could Identify People Without Cameras

The same Wi-Fi signals used for video calls, streaming, and smart-home devices may one day do something far more surprising: recognize who is standing in a room.

According to a ScienceDaily report in May 2026, German scientists identified people with near-perfect accuracy using ordinary Wi-Fi signals.

The method does not rely on cameras, microphones, facial recognition, or wearable devices. Instead, it studies the way a person’s body changes radio waves as they move through a space.

Wi-Fi signals constantly bounce off walls, furniture, and people. Because each person has a different body shape, posture, and movement pattern, those reflections can form a kind of invisible signature.

Researchers trained a system to recognize those patterns and match them to specific individuals.

The work remains experimental and is not yet a finished consumer product. Scientists described it as an early look at how wireless sensing could develop in the years ahead.

Such technology could eventually have practical uses. A home network might recognize when a resident enters a room, adjust lighting or temperature, or help monitor the safety of an older adult without using a camera.

It could also raise serious privacy questions.

Unlike a camera, Wi-Fi signals are largely invisible to the people being observed. That means someone might not know when a network is detecting their presence, movement, or identity.

The research is a reminder that wireless systems can collect more information than many users realize. Signals that appear to simply carry internet traffic may also reveal who is nearby and how they are moving.

For now, Wi-Fi-based identification remains in the laboratory. But the findings suggest that future networks may do more than connect devices.

They may also be able to answer a question once left to cameras and people: Who is in the room?
