Major Traffic Disruptions Expected Due to Railroad Crossing Maintenance in Front Royal

Published

on

Front Royal residents and motorists are bracing for significant traffic disruptions due to scheduled railroad crossing maintenance by Norfolk Southern. The maintenance work will impact Route 624 (Happy Creek Road) at two critical crossings. The first phase of the work is set for Wednesday, February 14, at the Route 606 (Shenandoah Shores Road) crossing, followed by the second phase on Thursday, February 15, at the Route 624 crossing near Route 647 (Dismal Hollow Road).

The maintenance on February 14 will lead to a substantial one-day transportation disruption from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., affecting Shenandoah Shores, Christendom College, and numerous businesses and residential areas. These areas rely on the crossing at Route 606 and Route 624 for access, but during the maintenance, no passage will be possible except for emergency services. With no detour options available for this crossing, residents and travelers are advised to prepare for a complete halt in travel to and from the area during work hours.

The following day, February 15, will see Route 624 closed just west of the Route 647 intersection from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Detour routes will be in place to navigate around the closure:

  • Traffic from the west (Front Royal area) on Route 624 will be directed south on Leach Run Parkway, east on Route 55 (John Marshall Highway), and then north on Route 647.
  • Traffic approaching from the east (near the I-66 overpass bridges) on Route 624 will follow Route 647 south, Route 55 west, and then north on Leach Run Parkway to bypass the maintenance area.

These disruptions are a necessary part of ensuring the long-term safety and reliability of the railroad crossings in question. Motorists are encouraged to plan their routes accordingly and to allow extra time for travel during these dates. The work schedule is weather-dependent, and any changes to the timing will be communicated to the public as soon as possible.

Residents, businesses, and commuters are urged to prepare for these disruptions. Cooperation and patience during this period will help minimize the impact on daily routines and local traffic flow.
