Fire Prevention Week is October 6-12: Make Smoke Alarms Work for You!

Fire Prevention Week (FPW) 2024 is here, and this year’s focus is on the crucial role of working smoke alarms in keeping homes and families safe. Smoke alarms are your first line of defense when a fire breaks out, giving you precious time to get out safely. Here are some key tips to make sure your alarms are doing their job:

1. Install Smoke and CO Alarms Throughout Your Home
Ensure smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms are installed on every level of your home, including the basement. Alarms should also be placed inside and outside every bedroom to ensure everyone in the house is alerted quickly in case of fire or dangerous CO levels.

2. Choose the Right Placement
Placement is key to making sure your alarms work properly. Smoke rises, so ceiling placement is ideal. If you need to mount your alarm on a wall, ensure it is at least 12 inches from the ceiling and three feet from any corner. Avoid placing alarms near air ducts or fans, as moving air can blow smoke away from the sensor, making it less effective. Keep alarms at least 10 feet away from cooking appliances in kitchens to reduce false alarms while providing safety coverage.

3. Regular Testing and Battery Replacement
Make it a habit to test your smoke alarms every month. Just press the test button and ensure everyone in the house knows what the alarm sounds like. For alarms with replaceable batteries, switch them out every six months—when you change your clocks is a good reminder. For alarms with 10-year sealed batteries, replace the whole unit once the decade is up.

4. Keep Fire Extinguishers Handy
Smoke alarms are essential, but having a fire extinguisher can also help keep a small fire from becoming a big problem. Keep extinguishers on every level of your home, especially in high-risk areas like the kitchen and garage. Make sure everyone in your household knows how to use them—remember the PASS method: Pull the pin, Aim the nozzle, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep from side to side.

This Fire Prevention Week, check your smoke alarms and fire safety tools for a few moments. Simple actions like installing alarms in the right places, testing them regularly, and being prepared can make all the difference in keeping your home and loved ones safe.
