Blue Ridge Wildlife Center Patient of the Week: American Beaver

Published

on

Thanks to your incredible generosity, we not only met but exceeded our Giving Tuesday goal of $20,000! We’re so grateful for your support, which empowers us to care for native wildlife in need.

As a special thank-you, we’re sharing a BONUS Patient of the Week—a glimpse at the impact you’ve made possible.

Meet patient 24-3795, an American Beaver recently transferred to us from the Richmond Wildlife Center.

This young female beaver arrived with neurological symptoms, including a head tilt and delayed responses, likely caused by unwitnessed trauma. On top of that, we’re treating her for diarrhea, dehydration, and a low appetite.

While her progress is encouraging—she’s now able to stand consistently without falling and is starting to eat solid foods—her prognosis for a full recovery is still guarded.

Beavers are incredible ecosystem engineers. They build ponds, dams, and wetlands that provide habitats for countless other species. Their dams trap sediment, reduce soil erosion, and filter out toxic pollutants, creating cleaner and safer water. Wetlands maintained by beavers even help mitigate floods and fires, making them essential to the health of our environment.

We hope this beaver will continue to improve and return to the wild, where she can resume her vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

If you’ve ever been frustrated by beaver activity, like chewing or flooding, we encourage you to check out the Human-Beaver Coexistence Fund. Their resources highlight the many benefits of living alongside beavers and offer on-the-ground solutions for managing beaver-related challenges.

Your generosity gives patients like this young beaver a fighting chance. Thank you for making that possible!
