Virginia Rolls Out New Safety Inspection Stickers for 2025 – Enhanced Features Aim to Boost Security and Confidence

Virginia drivers are noticing a colorful change this year as the state unveils a new safety inspection sticker. Vehicles that pass inspection in 2025 will display the green sticker, marking the first year the color has been used. But it’s not just the fresh design catching attention—the updated sticker comes with advanced security features aimed at combating counterfeit attempts and ensuring road safety.

The Virginia State Police announced that the updated stickers now feature a holographic state seal and a dogwood flower image, symbols that are difficult for counterfeiters to replicate. These additions enhance the integrity of the state’s inspection program and reassure drivers that vehicles with valid stickers have been properly inspected.

For the first time, the stickers also include two QR codes. The larger QR code directs users to the Virginia State Police Safety Division webpage, providing easy access to inspection-related information. The smaller QR code is reserved for administrative use by inspectors. To further improve clarity, the expiration month is printed on a white background, while the year is prominently displayed over the dogwood image.

Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Hanley, Interim Superintendent of the Virginia State Police, explained the motivation behind the changes. “We want Virginians to have confidence that when they see an inspection sticker on a vehicle, that vehicle has been truly inspected by a qualified professional and is safe to be out on the road,” Hanley said. “These new features add an additional layer of security to ensure criminals are not circumventing the safety inspection system.”

The new color-coded system will rotate annually to distinguish stickers from year to year. Stickers issued in 2025, expiring in 2026, will be green. The 2026-2027 stickers will turn blue, while 2028 and 2029 will feature red and yellow stickers, respectively.

Virginia’s safety inspection program plays a critical role in keeping the state’s roads safe, requiring vehicles to pass regular checks to ensure they meet safety standards. By implementing these new security features, officials hope to maintain the program’s integrity and build public trust.

As drivers across Virginia spot the new green stickers on windshields, they can rest assured that these updates reflect the state’s commitment to safer roads and a secure inspection process.
