Reader encourages safe driving

To the Editor:

I drive these lovely country roads every day. But, what I do not understand is why so many drivers cannot safely share with road with me. When I’m driving, I am usually always thinking defensively, and expecting the unexpected. Especially on our back roads, where our wildlife could impact traffic flow.

I try to travel at or maybe even a little above speed limit all the time. But, when I’m moving along at a good clip, maybe at 57 or 59 MPH, why must the car behind me move up and sit right on my tail? When someone does that, I usually slow down. Not to aggravate them, but to preserve my car. My little Ford sedan is no match in a crash with their half ton pickup truck!

But, I fail to understand how so many drivers seem to have forgotten this essential aspect of safe driving: maintaining a safe distance from cars in front of them!

Please, I know you’re in a hurry. We usually are ALL hurrying to get somewhere. But, that is NO excuse for driving at a high speed and sitting on someone’s tail! Remember as you travel, you can end up with a totaled vehicle, or totaling the car in front of you, and maybe even killing a back seat passenger, if you are tail gating and they have to stop suddenly. You most certainly will be ticketed as well!

Especially this time of year, as weather is warmer, or fog comes in, there can be any number of factors which could end in a bad accident, if you don’t maintain a safe distance from cars in front of you! Please be good to your fellow drivers and yourself! BACK OFF!

Thanks!
Ruth Chichester
