A Tale of Two Cities

Published

on

The Warren County Board of Supervisors is to be commended for conducting negotiations with the board of directors of Samuel’s Public Library in a thorough and professional manner, ultimately reaching a final agreement.

The appointed library board is to be dissolved, with new members selected jointly by the BOS and the Samuels Public Library Board of Directors.

All outstanding issues have been addressed, and the previously withheld tax funds are now being fully released. This positive development represents considerable progress in resolving concerns within the community and fosters an environment where healing and unity can take place.

The rest of the story

The Board of Supervisors did not take any action to initiate negotiations with Samuels Public Library. The board’s ongoing power dynamics and authoritative actions persist.

Ninety million dollars was distributed to county departments and nonprofit organizations in Warren County. However, there is currently no oversight or special committee set up to supervise their operations or spending.

The Public Library, which provides services to the entire community, has undergone scrutiny for potential indiscretions and mismanagement. However, no evidence of any wrongdoing has been found.

The board is not addressing the needs and interests of children, young adults, and senior citizens who receive help from the programs offered by Samual’s Public Library. There is concern that the board’s priorities may not align with the best interests of these community members.

The board’s decision not to participate in negotiations questions their leadership and has raised questions about whether personal opinions or the influence of religious zealots are affecting their consideration of community needs.

Is the board apprehensive about meeting with individuals who have greater ability and knowledge about the rules and regulations governing nonprofit organizations?

Transparency, openness, and accountability are essential qualities expected from elected officials, rather than decision-making through closed-door meetings.

During my five decades as a resident of Warren County, I have never seen such a deplorable action by elected officials.

It is my expectation that the next county administrator will ensure you are fully informed of the duties of elected officials and the responsibilities you hold toward the citizens.
