Bertie Marie Hooper Woods (1938 – 2024)

Bertie Marie Hooper Woods was born December 8, 1938, in Cambridge, MD, to the late Albanus Hooper Sr. and Sarah Elliott Hooper.  She transitioned peacefully from this life on February 9, 2024, at Lynn Care Center in Front Royal, VA.

A Home Going Service will be held on Thursday, February 15, at 12:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 32 North Royal Ave., Front Royal, with The Rev. Dr. Christy McMillin-Goodwin officiating. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. at the church on Thursday. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall immediately following the service.  Interment will be on Friday, February 16, at 11:00 a.m. in Culpeper National Cemetery, 305 US Ave., Culpeper, VA.

She was a proud graduate of Mace’s Lane High School in Cambridge, MD.  She embarked on a journey in nursing after working at Johns Hopkins Hospital as a receptionist in the Personnel Department. She attended Bowie State University in Bowie, MD, and took courses in Business Education.  She later enrolled in the field of Cosmetology where her talents extended to the realm of beauty as she opened her own salon in Rochester, NY, showcasing her passion for hairstyling.

On August 5, 1967, Bertie embarked on a lifelong journey of love and companionship as she joined in marriage with Alfred Woods of Preston, MD. For 56 years, their bond grew stronger with each passing day, filled with shared joys, laughter, and cherished memories.  Together, they explored the wonders of the country, delighting in the adventures of travel and the simple pleasures of being in each other’s company. Their love story, marked by devotion and unity, remains an enduring testament to the power of enduring love.

Bertie’s vibrant spirit and profound love for music illuminated her life’s journey.  Whether singing, playing the piano (sometimes an organ at home), or composing soul-stirring melodies for churches, her musical prowess resonated with warmth and passion. Her dedication to music led her to assist in producing her own gospel album entitled “Something Had to Break for Me,” a project that filled her with immense excitement and pride.

Her musical talents were not confined to personal projects. She also directed the Youth Choir at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Front Royal, VA, where her commitment to nurturing young voices shone brightly. Bertie found joy in singing with various church groups and sharing her gift of composing songs with them, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were touched by her music.

Bertie’s dedication to her community extended beyond her musical talents. She poured her creativity into writing church plays for special occasions, adding a touch of theatrical magic to religious celebrations. Actively engaged in various church activities, she exemplified service and compassion, embodying the spirit of kindness and generosity.

Her involvement in local charities and community groups showcased her commitment to making a difference.  Bertie’s leadership shone through as she coordinated local fundraisers, including initiatives like the St. Luke Community Clinic, Meals on Wheels, and the Town of Front Royal Volunteer Fire Department, among other noble endeavors. Her selflessness and tireless efforts left an indelible impact on her community, embodying the true essence of altruism and goodwill.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Rhonda Scott-Dingwall, in 2019; sisters, Ruth Henson, Erma Gibson, and Ramona Kennedy; brothers, Ruben Hooper and Rommie Hooper; and brothers-in-law, Winfield Henson, Donald Gibson, and Elwood Kennedy.

Bertie leaves to mourn her devoted husband, the Rev. Alfred Woods; her devoted daughters, Misty Brown/Brewer (David) of Fuquay-Varina, NC, and Sherri Spratt (Jeff) of Columbus, OH; sister, Elva Hooper (Dorsey) of Bowie, MD; brother, Albanus Hooper Jr (Dorothy) of Cambridge, MD; grandsons, Chaz White of Raleigh, NC, Travis Davis of Front Royal, VA, and Ben Brown of Raleigh, NC; granddaughters, Shai Brown, Christina Dingwall and Desiree Brown, all of Raleigh, NC; two great-granddaughters; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; Goddaughter, Najae Fitzhugh; and a host of friends.
