Front Royal Cardinals fall to the River Bandits in low scoring affair

Despite a solid effort by Cardinals’ pitching staff, the offense that has looked strong in the last several games just couldn’t get started, and the Cardinals dropped a game to the Woodstock River Bandits 0-4. Starting pitcher Kyle Turner allowed only one hit through the first three innings and was repeatedly able to induce River Bandits flyouts and ground balls. In the fourth inning, however, a leadoff walk proved costly, when the River Bandit’s took advantage of smart baserunning to score the first run of the game.

At the end of the inning, the River Bandits had a two-run lead. They tacked on one more run in each the fifth and sixth inning, which ended up being the only runs of the night. Relievers Andrew Hoguet and Dylan Verdonk held the River Bandits scoreless through the last three innings.

Offensively, the Cardinals tallied 14 strikeouts during the game. Dylan Menhennet, Arrison Perez and Mason Nadeau each had one hit. Turner took the loss for the Cardinals.

Coach Hurla is confident that his team will be able to capitalize on the strengths shown by pitchers and batters lately, albeit in separate games. “We got a good start tonight on the mound and pitched well in relief as well. It was an off night offensively. Looking to put it all together tomorrow when we play two at Harrisonburg.”

The Cardinals played a double header, June 16th against the Harrisonburg Turks, in Harrisonburg. The Cardinals next home game is sponsored by Lester & Mowery Pharmacy and will be Tuesday, June 18th, against the Covington Lumberjacks. Game time is 7:00 pm
