Habitat for Humanity Hosts Groundbreaking Ceremony for Affordable Housing Project in Warren County

A groundbreaking ceremony for Habitat for Humanity’s transformative, affordable housing project took place on October 23, 2024, in Warren County. The event marked a major milestone in the local organization’s mission to rebuild communities and provide homes for families in need. The project is set to transform derelict properties along Osage Street into vibrant, safe homes for working families, promising to revitalize the entire neighborhood.

A Community-Driven Effort

The Executive Director of the Warren County chapter of Habitat for Humanity, Andrea Ross, opened the event with heartfelt words of gratitude. Ross acknowledged the community’s hard work, saying, “We did not make it out here by ourselves. It has been a community effort.” She praised the determination of everyone involved, from the board of directors to local businesses, civic groups, and families who stood by the project through tough times.

Reflecting on the past year’s challenges, Ross expressed how close the organization came to merging or closing due to financial difficulties. However, the organization pushed forward thanks to support from local donors, volunteers, and community leaders. Ross highlighted the crucial role of Police Chief Kahle Magalis, who wrote a letter advocating the importance of maintaining Habitat’s presence in Warren County.

Praise for Local Partners and Supporters

The sense of community was evident throughout the event. Representatives from the Rotary Clubs, town council members, and local businesses stood side by side to celebrate the groundbreaking.

Ross gave special thanks to angel donor Anita Welch, who, on behalf of her stepfather, James K. Wright Jr., a veteran who wants to leave a lasting legacy helping his community, played a crucial role in pushing the project forward. Though Wright couldn’t attend, Welch represented him. Welch shared the emotional story of Wright’s mission to give back, saying, “This means the world to him.” Welch described how Wright had directed her to find organizations he could support before his passing. Habitat for Humanity’s project perfectly fits his vision of improving the community.

Looking Toward the Future

After thanking numerous partners and community leaders, Ross invited Debra Siksay, the current board president, to share a few words. Siksay expressed her gratitude for the project’s overwhelming support. “We are stronger than we have been in quite some time,” she said, reflecting on the organization’s journey from near closure to launching a major new development.

Siksay also led the group in a prayer, asking for strength, patience, and enthusiasm as they move forward with the project. She emphasized the long-lasting impact of the work they are about to undertake, envisioning a future where this once-forgotten street becomes a thriving community hub, home to many families for years to come.

“This is phase one, but our goal is to complete the street,” Siksay said, with an eye toward the next steps in the project. She encouraged everyone present to imagine the potential transformation of Osage Street—a place where affordable homes will soon replace abandoned buildings that will strengthen the local community.

A Community Reimagined

The ceremony ended with a comment from Sheriff Crystal Cline. She shared her excitement about the project’s potential to improve residents’ safety and quality of life. “We have good people who have lived here for a long time,” Cline said, “and they’ve been asking for help.”

Sheriff Cline praised Habitat for Humanity’s vision, calling it a “big vision” that will take hard work but is crucial for Warren County’s future. She added that revitalizing this neighborhood will bring hope and reduce the need for frequent police presence, creating a safer, more vibrant community for everyone.

Finally, as the golden shovels were lined up for the ceremonial groundbreaking, there was a shared sense of accomplishment and optimism. Volunteers, board members, and community leaders posed for pictures, marking the official start of what promises to be a life-changing development for many local families.

While this is just the beginning, the energy and enthusiasm surrounding the project ensure that it is not just about building homes but about rebuilding hope and fostering a stronger community for all.
