Monkey Typing Theory Debunked: Shakespeare Isn’t in Their Future

Published

on

The famous monkey theory, which posits that an infinite number of monkeys typing randomly on keyboards could eventually produce Shakespeare’s works, has long been a whimsical thought experiment. However, Australian mathematicians Stephen Woodcock and Jay Falletta have put this theory to the test mathematically—and the results are as improbable as they sound.

The duo calculated that even with every living chimpanzee on Earth typing one key per second for the entire lifespan of the universe, they would still fail to recreate Shakespeare’s 885,000 words. In fact, their odds of typing something as simple as the word “banana” within a 30-year chimp lifespan stand at a mere 5 percent. The probability of a chimp typing even a short phrase is an astronomical 1 in 10 million billion billion.

The Science of Impossibility

The experiment highlights the sheer improbability of randomness, creating complex, meaningful text. The English language consists of 26 letters, and adding spaces, punctuation, and capitalization makes the odds of correctly guessing even a small sequence staggeringly slim.

As an illustration, consider this: If the hypothetical monkeys attempted Shakespeare’s “To be, or not to be,” the sequence would require exactly 18 characters, each in the correct order. Mathematicians estimate the odds of success are so minuscule that even infinite time wouldn’t guarantee the result.

Was the Study Necessary?

While Woodcock and Falletta’s study provides definitive proof against a long-dismissed idea, some mathematicians have questioned its relevance. Critics point out that billions of humans typing on the internet for decades haven’t accidentally reproduced Shakespeare either, suggesting that the problem doesn’t need further exploration.

Still, the study serves as an engaging reminder of the limits of randomness and the sheer complexity of human creativity. For now, it seems Shakespeare’s literary genius will remain firmly out of reach—whether for chimps or an infinite number of monkeys.
