Protecting Your Vision: Workplace Eye Safety Matters

Published

on

March is Workplace Eye Health and Safety Month, a reminder of just how common—and preventable—eye injuries are on the job. Every day, about 1,000 workers in the U.S. suffer eye injuries, some of which cause lasting damage or even blindness.

Who Is at Risk?

Eye hazards exist in nearly every industry, but certain workers face a higher risk. Mechanics, carpenters, plumbers, and repair workers are frequently injured, while more than one-third of reported injuries happen to assemblers, sanders, and machine operators. Manufacturing workers account for nearly half of all eye injuries, with construction workers making up about 20%.

The Leading Causes of Eye Injuries

According to safety experts, 70% of workplace eye injuries come from flying particles, sparks, and falling objects. Most of these are tiny—smaller than a pinhead—but they move at high speeds, sometimes faster than a hand-thrown object. Chemicals are another major hazard, responsible for one in five workplace eye injuries. Other incidents occur when objects swing from an attached position, striking workers who aren’t properly protected.

In many cases, these injuries could be prevented with proper eye protection. Safety glasses with side shields, goggles, and face shields can all help reduce the risk.

Office Workers Face Eye Health Risks, Too

Even in office environments, eye health is a concern. Nearly half of computer users report experiencing eye strain at some point, with symptoms like dryness, headaches, and blurred vision.

Experts recommend taking regular breaks to rest the eyes, blinking more often while using a screen, and adjusting workstation conditions. Anti-glare screens, proper posture, and lubricating eye drops can all help reduce discomfort.

Prevention Is Key

Whether working in a factory, on a construction site, or at a desk, protecting your eyes should be a priority. Proper safety gear, regular eye exams, and healthy screen habits can all go a long way in maintaining good vision for years to come.
