Ralph S. Markee (1941 – 2022)

Ralph Spencer Markee, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, aged 80, of Flint Hill, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 1, 2022, in Rappahannock County.

A memorial of his life will be held at 3 pm on Sunday, September 25, 2022, at Washington Baptist Church in Washington, Virginia.  Following the service, the family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of Washington Baptist Church for a time of food and fellowship.

Ralph Markee was born on November 24, 1941, in Kings County, New York, the son of the late John Edward and Marie Judd Markee.  He was raised in Brooklyn, New York, and Centereach, Long Island, where the family passion for cars, boats, and motorcycles was ignited.

Mr. Markee believed in continual education.  He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at Houghton College, Houghton, New York.  An Associate’s degree in Computers followed at Lord Fairfax Community College, Middletown, Virginia.  He completed a Master of Business Administration at East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee.

Ralph began working as a youth, washing cars at Gaines Motors (Oldsmobile) in Brooklyn, New York, and participating in the construction of New Village Congregational Church in Centereach, Long Island.  He then spent 24 years at Avtex Fibers in Front Royal, Virginia; rising from a laboratory technician to vice president of operations.  He then spent seven years with North American Rayon in Elizabethton, Tennessee as manager of environmental and quality controls.  This was followed by eight years in the marketing department at Juan, Inc in Winchester, Virginia.  His last job, the “best job he ever had,” was working twelve years as a farm hand at Rose Hill Farm, Massies Corner, Virginia.

Mr. Markee served the Warren and Rappahannock County community throughout his life as a lay minister performing services and preaching whenever asked.  He served on the Boy Scouts of America Troop 52 committee in Front Royal, Virginia, for more than 15 years.  He was a Vigil member of the ShenRappaWa council’s service organization.

Ralph married Lois Everswick 59 years ago in Houghton, New York.  They made a great team as they moved from New York to Virginia and beyond, building a new family and finding wonderful new friends along the way.  He will be greatly missed by family and friends both near and far.

Surviving Ralph is his loving wife Lois of Flint Hill, Virginia; sons, Thomas and wife Kimberly of Herndon, Virginia, and Timothy and wife Jennifer of Charlottesville, Virginia; two brothers, Neil and wife Susan of Palm City, Florida, and John and wife Susan of Selden, Long Island; three sisters, Marilyn Percy of Haymarket, Virginia, Lois Giuffreda and husband Richard of Palm City, Florida, and Roberta Variale and husband Anthony of Trinity, Florida; as well as six grandchildren; Derrek Markee, Johnathan Markee, Matthew Markee, Leif Markee, Luke Markee, and Logan Markee.

Larry P. Beahm (1960 – 2024)

Larry P. Beahm, 63, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at Blue Ridge Hospice in Winchester, Va.

He was born on July 22, 1960, in Page County and was the son of the late Boyd F Beahm and Lamont P Beahm.

He is survived by a daughter, Krista Beahm of Front Royal, and a granddaughter, Kayle Beahm of Luray; brother, Randal Beahm Sr. of Luray; sister, Robin Eye of Waynesboro.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Beahm, and a beloved dog, Shooter.

Ralph Edward Cable (1927 – 2024)

Ralph Edward Cable, 96, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Warren Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service will occur at 4 p.m. on June 1, 2024, at Calvary Episcopal Church, 132 N Royal Ave, Front Royal, Virginia 22630, with the Reverend Valerie Hayes officiating. Following the service, the family will have a private inurnment in the Calvary Memorial Garden, then meet for a Celebration Dinner.

Ralph was born to the late Frederick and Ethel Cable on April 13, 1927, in Derby, Connecticut. His daughter, Linda Daley, and his eight siblings also preceded him.

Surviving Ralph are his loving wife, Sally B. Cable; his daughters, Alice Weinreb of Canal Fulton, OH, Carol Cable of Front Royal, and Janice Derico of Ducktown, TN; his five grandsons; and his three great-grandchildren.

Ralph was a proud member of the United States Navy and served on the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II. He was also a member of Calvary Episcopal Church, the American Legion Giles B. Cook Post 53, and a vestry member.

Ralph was very involved with his church, the Senior Center, and C-CAP; he often made pasta sauce, soup, and chili for the church and community meals. His friends often said his chili was the hottest and would have trouble eating it.

For 20 years, Ralph ran a dairy farm in Lafayette Township in Chippewa Lake, Ohio, until 1978. While there, he was very involved with St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Medina County, Ohio.

Ralph’s main career was as a food inspector; he learned how while working with Smucker’s in Ohio in 1968. He then got his certification and worked as a food inspector for the USDA for 25 years until he retired. Following his “retirement,” he would occasionally assist as a food inspector.

Ralph also started playing harmonica when he was 64 years old. He played harmonica for 30 years with the Rusty Strings Band but would also play for anyone at any time. When someone had a birthday, Ralph would immediately whip out his harmonica and play for them.

Florence Gertrude Roman (1950 – 2024)

As the devoted wife of a military service member, Florence’s life journey took her across the globe, where she embraced diverse cultures and communities. Her unwavering support and steadfast love were the foundation of her family’s resilience during their travels.

Florence served her country with honor and distinction in the United States Air Force from 1969 to 1971. Following her military service, she continued her service to the nation alongside her husband, contributing to military communities worldwide. She later embarked on a career with the Army Corps of Engineers, where she dedicated herself tirelessly until her retirement in 2014.

In 1974, Florence united in marriage with the love of her life, Candido Roman, who preceded her in death. Together, they shared a deep love and raised a beautiful family. Florence was a devoted mother to her three children, David F. Roman of Virginia, Michael E. Roman of New Jersey, and Matthew K. Roman of the Netherlands. She also embraced her role as a stepmother to Christine T. Roman, Jay Allen Roman (deceased), Steven C. Roman, Sr., and Janette Roman Rickards of California.

Florence’s presence was a beacon of strength and warmth to all who knew her. Her gentle spirit, compassionate heart, and love for adventure enriched the lives of those around her.

She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Jean Riley of Stephen City. She was predeceased by her sister Linda Stonebreaker.

She will be deeply missed by her daughter-in-law, Linda; grandchildren, Kelli, Meghan, Ethan, Jackson, Chandler, Ashley, Jamey, Nicholas, Rachel, Steven Jr., Samantha, Tyler, Joshua; and her great-grandchildren, Lynissa, Cylas, Liam, Ian, Tatiana, Aaliyah, Oceanna, Nipsey and Forever.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Blue Ridge Hospice for their unwavering support and compassionate care during Florence’s illness and final days.

In honoring Florence’s wishes, a small memorial service will be held to celebrate her life on May 20, 2024, from 6-8 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home. Her ashes will be scattered at sea, fulfilling her final wish to be reunited with her beloved husband.

Aden Lee Madison Hamman (2004 – 2024)

Aden Lee Madison Hamman, 19, of Strasburg, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, May 10, 2024, at his home.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 19, at 2:00 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home, with Sammy Campbell officiating.  The inurnment will be private.

Aden was born August 17, 2004, to Sybil Hamman of Strasburg, Virginia.

Aden was a kind, loving person who enjoyed being around family and friends and always knew how to make someone’s day. He was also a huge Super Mario fan and collected every game and console he could get his hands on. He started playing as a young boy sitting on his Mamaw’s lap in front of the TV.  In his early years, he mastered playing a new ‘Mario’ game and beating it on the same day.   As he would say, “I crushed the boss”.  He could sit and talk about the games for hours and go into extreme detail on all the events and challenges he had to face to beat the games. It was mind-blowing listening to him.

As Aden grew into a young man, he joined an online club where he would write stories and share them online. He was excited about doing this as he had finally found a passion for something new, but don’t let that fool you; Mario was still his #1.

Aden also enjoyed reading, listening to music, and attending concerts. With his favorite band being ‘Imagine Dragons’, sometimes he would blast them through the whole house without even knowing. Just dancing away in his room.

Surviving with his mom is a brother, Aron Hamman; maternal grandparents, Joseph and Clara Ramey; aunts; uncles; cousins; friends; and a half-sister, Whitney Beaty.

Aden loved his family dearly and will be greatly missed by Mom, his family, and everyone who knew him.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 19, from 1-2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Celebration of Life for Donna: A Riverside Cookout

Join us for a heartfelt “Celebration of Life” in honor of Donna on Sunday, May 19th, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Front Royal Boat Landing near Eastham Park on Luray Avenue. Donna cherished her time at the river, whether picnicking, fishing, or simply relaxing. We will host a cookout to celebrate her love for the outdoors.

Donna Leigh Burke (Williams), 39, of Front Royal, VA, passed away peacefully at Winchester Medical Center on April 2, 2024, due to health complications, with family by her side and her wonderful husband telling her how much she and their kids loved her and reassuring her that they would be okay.

Donna was born November 27, 1984, to the late Jerry Martin Williams and Nancy Wines Williams of Chester Gap, VA, where they lived and raised Donna in her family home.  She received her GED from Rappahannock County, VA.  Donna was a proud and devoted daughter, wife, and mother.

Donna leaves behind her dedicated husband of 17 years, Joseph Burke (Joe); their two greatest accomplishments – Damion Martin Burke, 17, and Khloe Janelle Burke, 14, of Front Royal, VA; her two sisters-in-law, Felicia Burke of Front Royal, VA and Ashly Burke of Maurertown, VA; one nephew, Owen Armstrong, of Maurertown, VA and her in-laws, Vincent Burke, Jr., and Denise Burke of Front Royal, VA.  She also leaves multiple aunts, uncles, cousins, and childhood friends from Rappahannock County, VA.

A celebration of life will follow at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions (for the children) may be made to any First Bank location.  In addition, anyone who would like to shower the family with love and support can mail cards to the Burke Family at 1896 Edgemont Avenue, Front Royal, VA  22630.

Edna “Jean” Troxell Reil, 82, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away at her home on Saturday, May 11, 2024.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Panorama Memorial Gardens, 4917 Strasburg Road, Waterlick, with Sammy Campbell officiating.

Mrs. Reil was born to the late James and Edna Pryor Troxell on June 18, 1941, in Woodstock, Virginia.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Reil; two brothers, Jackie Troxell and Jimmy Troxell; and three sisters, Helen Mitchell, Linda Drummonds, and Shirley Giles.  She was Seventh Day Adventist by faith.

Survivors include her two sons, William “Billy” Davis (Angie) and Bradley Reil (Tiffany); daughter, Elizabeth “Troy” Darr (Joe); two brothers, Jerry Troxell and Boyd “Peanut” Troxell; five grandchildren, Logan Davis (Kaitlyn), Nicholas Davis (Kimora), Joseph Darr (Vikki), Jared Darr (Jordan) and Aurora “Little Bit” Reil and great-grandson, Jared Darr II.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Maddox Funeral Home or the family to assist with funeral expenses.
