Should You Include a Photo on Your Resume? (Probably Not!)

Published

on

In today’s digital age, you might feel tempted to put a face to your name on your resume. But wait! While adding a photo might seem like a way to stand out, it can actually reduce your chances of landing an interview. Here’s why:

1. Focus on Skills, Not Looks

Your resume should showcase your job qualifications. Including a photo takes up valuable space that could be used to highlight your skills, experience, and accomplishments. Let your achievements do the talking!

2. Unconscious Bias Is a Risk

Recruiters are trained to focus on qualifications, but unconscious bias can still creep in. A photo could introduce a distraction that shifts attention away from your abilities, potentially affecting your chances.

3. It’s Not the Norm (in Most Places)

In North America and many other parts of the world, resumes typically do not include photos. Including one might make your application seem out of place, unprofessional, or even outdated.

4. Recruiters Will See You Online Anyway

In the digital era, recruiters often search for candidates online. If they want to see a picture, they’ll likely find one on your professional social media profiles, like LinkedIn. So, there’s no need to include it on your resume.

Your resume is your chance to shine based on your skills and experience. Skip the photo and focus on crafting a compelling document that highlights why you’re the perfect candidate for the job.
