Walton Wednesday Invites Kids to Explore Pond Life June 10
Walton Wednesday is returning June 10 with a morning of outdoor learning, pond discovery, lunch, fishing, and family fun at the Warren County chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America.
The free public program begins at 10 a.m. at 3364 Gooney Manor Loop in Bentonville and will focus on “Things That Live in Our Pond.” Children will learn about the many small creatures that begin their lives in water and the role ponds play in the natural world.
This week’s event includes lunch, so families do not need to pack one. Hot dogs, chips, and ice pops will be provided.
Sharon Longmire, events coordinator for the conservation group, said Walton Wednesday outings are designed to help children spend time outdoors and connect with nature on the group’s 155-acre farm.
“We offer these programs to try to get local kids out into the environment — to help them realize how much there is to appreciate about it,” Longmire said.
Walton Wednesday programs are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. every Wednesday in June. Each event includes a short conservation lesson, followed by a take-home craft tied to the topic. After the lesson and craft, families are invited to eat lunch, fish, play, and enjoy the property.
“Every topic we teach is conservation-minded, and there is a craft that matches the class,” Longmire said.
The June 10 pond-life program is expected to be hands-on and engaging for children and adults. Longmire said it is always exciting for families to see how many insects and other critters begin life in the water before becoming part of the larger ecosystem.
The events are held rain or shine and are open to the public. Families are encouraged to invite friends, relatives, and neighbors. A parent or guardian must remain on the property with children during IWLA programs.
