on

On September 23, 2024, at 6:00 p.m., historian Don Hakenson will give a speech about the hangings of Mosby’s men during the Civil War. The event will take place at the Mosby Monument in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Front Royal, Virginia. The John S. Mosby Camp, Sons of Confederate Veterans, is sponsoring the presentation.

Don Hakenson, past president of the Stuart-Mosby Historical Society, will share a personal perspective on these tragic events. Hakenson is a descendant of Richard Anderson, one of the men hanged in Front Royal, bringing a unique connection to this chapter of Civil War history. His talk will explore the historical context of Mosby’s Rangers, the events leading to the hangings, and the lasting impact on the local community.

The hangings of Mosby’s men took place during the Civil War in Front Royal, where several members of John S. Mosby’s Rangers, a Confederate guerrilla unit, were captured and executed by Union forces. Hakenson’s presentation will cover the personal stories of those who were executed, including his ancestor Richard Anderson, and offer insights into how these events shaped the community.

This event is open to the public and provides a unique opportunity to learn about a lesser-known aspect of Civil War history in the Shenandoah Valley. It promises to be an informative evening for anyone interested in local history or the Civil War era.
