Governor Youngkin Declares State of Emergency Ahead of Winter Storm

Published

on

Governor Glenn Youngkin has declared a state of emergency as Virginia braces for a significant winter storm expected to hit this weekend. The storm, which will bring snow, freezing rain, and bitterly cold temperatures, is forecast to begin Sunday and continue into Monday, with impacts stretching across the Commonwealth.

Governor’s Warning

“I encourage all Virginians, visitors, and travelers to stay alert, monitor weather updates, and prepare now,” said Governor Youngkin. He urged those with travel plans to adjust accordingly, recommending Saturday travel instead of Sunday to avoid hazardous conditions.

Storm and Weather Impacts

  • Snow and Freezing Rain: Projected snowfall and icy conditions could create widespread travel disruptions starting Sunday afternoon and lasting into Monday.
  • Dangerous Temperatures: Daytime highs may stay below freezing through much of next week.
  • Gale Watches: Coastal areas face strong winds Friday night into Saturday, with winds increasing again Monday and Tuesday.

State Agencies in Action

  • Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM): Monitoring forecasts, coordinating resources, and preparing to respond to local requests for assistance.
  • Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT): Crews are pretreating roads and monitoring conditions. Travelers are advised to check the 511 Virginia app for real-time road updates.
  • Virginia State Police: Increasing patrols and urging residents to stay off roads unless absolutely necessary during the storm.

Preparedness Tips for Residents

  • Stay Safe on Roads: If you must drive, use headlights, slow down, avoid tailgating, and ensure your vehicle is winter-ready. Pack essentials like blankets, snacks, water, and an ice scraper.
  • Home Safety: Insulate your home, have additional heat sources, and keep a fire extinguisher handy. Replace carbon monoxide detector batteries.
  • Personal Safety: Dress in layers, wear a hat and mittens, and protect against frostbite.

Emergency Kit Essentials for Cars

Prepare your vehicle with items like:

  • Blankets, water, and snacks
  • Ice scraper, shovel, and jumper cables
