Event at Shenandoah University to Celebrate Survivors and Remember Lives Lost

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Northern Shenandoah Valley will bring the community together on March 21 to honor cancer survivors, remember those lost to the disease, and raise vital funds for cancer research and support services. The event will be held at Shenandoah University’s James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics and Event Center, starting with an opening ceremony at 6 p.m.

For the second consecutive year, it is estimated that more than two million new cancer diagnoses will occur in the United States, underscoring the importance of community support and action. Relay For Life, a global movement founded in 1985, has raised more than $6.8 billion to help save lives from cancer through advocacy, research, and patient services.

“Relay For Life is more than just a walk. It’s a movement that unites communities to support survivors, remember loved ones, and raise funds to improve the lives of those affected by cancer,” said Kayla Collins, senior development manager for the American Cancer Society. “Together, we can help ensure that everyone has the opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.”

The event will feature speeches from Barry Lee, former local radio personality, and Hakeem Leonard, Ph.D., Shenandoah University’s assistant provost for inclusion, diversity, and equity. Additional highlights include performances by Shenandoah University’s Harambee Gospel Choir, children’s activities sponsored by John Handley High School’s Interact Club, games, and themed laps organized by Shenandoah University students.

Founded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Tacoma, Washington, Relay For Life brings together communities worldwide to celebrate people who have been touched by cancer and to take action for change. Funds raised support the American Cancer Society’s mission in many ways, including funding breakthrough research, advocating for patients, and providing essential services to cancer patients and their families.
