Step into 2026 with First Day Hikes at Shenandoah River State Park
Ring in the new year with a walk in the woods, a riverside view, and a deeper connection to nature at Shenandoah River State Park in Bentonville, Virginia. On January 1, 2026, the park will host five guided hikes and activities as part of First Day Hikes, a national initiative that encourages everyone to get outdoors and start the year on the right foot — literally.
From wildlife-themed adventures to dog-friendly hikes and a relaxing afternoon stroll, there’s something for every age and ability level. Parking is free, no registration is required, and all activities are family-friendly.
Here’s what’s happening throughout the day:
10 a.m. – Winter Wonderland Hike
Massanutten Shelter Parking Lot
Begin your day with a peaceful 1.5-mile round-trip walk along the Cottonwood Trail. This flat trail includes a raised boardwalk through winter woodlands, perfect for families and casual hikers.
Along the way, discover how animals like salamanders and plants like Bluebells survive the cold months. Guided by park staff, this hike opens your eyes to the hidden activity of the natural world in winter.
11 a.m. – Friends Group Scenic Hike
Cullers Overlook
Enjoy panoramic river views before hiking half a mile down to the Visitor Center on easy terrain. Then choose to either:
- Return to the overlook for a 1-mile round trip
- Extend your hike to a 2.6-mile loop via Hemlock Hollow, Bluebell, and Campground Trails (easy to moderate terrain)
Afterward, warm up with light refreshments at the Visitor Center provided by the Friends of Shenandoah River State Park.
11 a.m. – 2 p.m. – Stick and Stone Studio
River Bend Discovery Center
Get creative and craft your own hiking stick with beads, twine, leather, and paint. Supplies are provided — just bring your own stick, found during your hike.
This drop-in activity is led by the Friends group and is open to all ages. A donation is encouraged to help support future park programs.
1 p.m. – B.A.R.K. Ranger Hike
Bluebell Trailhead (Near Canoe Launch)
Grab your pup and join a ranger-led 1-mile hike along the scenic Bluebell Trail. This easy trail has some exposed roots and rocks and winds along the river — ideal for curious noses and wagging tails.
At the end, dogs will receive a B.A.R.K. Ranger badge as part of a fun ceremony. Please keep dogs on non-retractable leashes no longer than 6 feet.
3 p.m. – First Day Stroll
RV Campground Firepit
Close out your day with a gentle, inclusive hike designed for all ability levels. This half-mile walk follows the River Trail, a mostly flat path that includes a few short wooden bridges and wide-open views.
Participants will be encouraged to use all their senses to explore the natural surroundings, making this a mindful and accessible experience to end the day on a peaceful note.
