March’s ‘Third Thursday’ at Warren Heritage Society’s Ivy Lodge Continues Magical Mix of Cultural and Musical History

Published

on

The Warren Heritage Society’s “Third Thursday” musical/historical exploration continued on March 19th despite the cancellation of headliner Excel due to health concerns of one member. Local musical staple Dewey “the King” Vaughan gathered with musician friends to continue what the Heritage Society refers to as an “evening of history, community, and great tunes

So, why wait for the weekend?

Do as instructed by the host venue: “Bring a friend, bring your love of music, and come enjoy a relaxed evening of history, community, and great tunes! Spend the evening exploring Warren County history through our museum exhibits, catching up with friends and neighbors, and enjoying some fantastic local music in one of Front Royal’s most beautiful historic spaces.”

Some audience members videotaped or audiotaped the band’s action. Royal Examiner Photos Roger Bianchini

“Doors open at 5:00 p.m., so come early to browse the exhibits and settle in for a great night.” Then there was the always welcome reminder that “Light refreshments will be provided.” And speaking of light refreshments, a “Thank you to On Cue for supporting this event!” was offered.

Band members gathering around local historical, musical staple Vaughan, included Excel bass and keyboardist Greg Williams, Pat Flowers, guitar, Kahle Magalis, guitar, and drummer Rick Wines.

Songs performed painted their own musical heritage. They included:

“Hot Legs” & “You Wear it Well” by Rod Stewart;

“All Right Now” by Free;

“Nights in White Satin” by Procol Harum;

“Jenny, Jenny” featuring the phone number lyric “867-5309” by Tommy Tutone;

“Baby Blue” by Badfinger;

“Feel Like Making Love” 1974 soul version by Roberta Flack, excellent 1975 rock version by Bad Company;

“You May Be Right” by Billy Joel;

“Hunk of Burning Love” by Elvis Presley;

“Midnight Rambler”, “Beast of Burden”, & “Satisfaction” by The Rolling Stones.

Talk about a HISTORY LESSON, Encore, Encore

The rhythm section of bassist Greg Williams and drummer Rick Wines goes bottom-heavy just for fun. Below, the photographer had to get this angle quickly before patrons returned to their table, snacks in hand. Uh oh, they’re back and looking pretty comfortable.
