Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal multi-vehicle crash that occurred Tuesday morning on Interstate 81 in Frederick County.

According to state police, the crash happened at approximately 9:49 a.m. near the 309-mile marker on Interstate 81 northbound.

Authorities said a tractor-trailer traveling southbound left the roadway, crossed through the median, and entered the northbound lanes, where it struck a second tractor-trailer head-on. The collision caused a fire and forced both trucks into a third tractor-trailer traveling northbound.

Police said a northbound sedan swerved to avoid the crash and struck a guardrail.

The driver of the southbound tractor-trailer died at the scene, according to investigators.

The driver of the second tractor-trailer suffered life-threatening injuries. The driver of the third tractor-trailer was not injured.

State police said the identity of the deceased driver is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The crash remains under investigation.
