State police turn to public for information regarding Double Toll Gate fatal accident

DOUBLE TOLL GATE – The Virginia State Police is turning to the public concerning the investigation of a fatal crash that occurred on Friday, May 11, in Clarke County.  Anyone who has witnessed the crash or has information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact Trooper K. J. Orr  at the VSP Winchester Office (540) 662-3313.

At 2:20 p.m., Friday, Virginia State Police Trooper K. J. Orr responded to a two-vehicle crash in Clarke County. The crash occurred at the intersection of Route 522 and Route 340, known as Double Toll Gate.

A 1995 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was traveling east on Route 277. As the Tacoma traveled through the intersection towards Route 340, it collided with a 2012 Toyota Tundra pickup truck headed north on Route 522.

The driver of the Tacoma pickup truck, a 69-year-old Stephens City, Va. man, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to Winchester Medical Center and is being treated for life-threatening injuries. His passenger, Gladys A. Hamilton, 90, of Stephens City, Va., died at the scene.

The driver of the Tundra pickup truck, a 37-year-old Front Royal, Va. man, was transported to Winchester Medical Center for treatment of serious, but non-life threatening, injuries. He was wearing a seat belt.

The crash remains under investigation at this time.
