Delegate Delores Oates Hosts Community Meeting to Discuss Legislative Priorities
On Thursday, November 14, 2024, Delegate Delores Oates and her legislative aides, Emily Windle, and Marla Mooney, hosted a community meeting at the North Warren Fire Station to outline her legislative priorities for the upcoming General Assembly session. The event was well-attended by constituents eager to learn about the work being done to represent their concerns in Richmond.
Advocating for Women and Families
Delegate Oates highlighted her continued focus on issues impacting women, including reintroducing her “Women in Sports” bill. This legislation ensures fairness in women’s athletics by requiring participants to compete based on biological sex. Additionally, she addressed the critical need for improving maternal healthcare in rural Virginia. “The consolidation of healthcare systems has left rural women traveling long distances for essential care,” Oates said. She mentioned exploring solutions like mobile units to provide check-ups closer to home, particularly for women nearing delivery.
Oates also emphasized protecting women from stalking and abuse. One proposed bill aims to increase penalties for individuals who use devices like AirTags to track others in violation of protective orders.
Education Initiatives
Oates reiterated her commitment to addressing inequities in school funding. She described efforts to reform the Local Composite Index (LCI), which determines state education funding.
“Rural communities deserve the same educational opportunities as urban ones,” she said, noting that underfunding in rural areas has led to teacher shortages as educators migrate to better-paying districts in Northern Virginia.
Expanding career and technical education is another priority. Oates advocates introducing such programs earlier in school to spark interest in robotics and emerging technologies. She also strongly supported school choice, sharing her personal experience with homeschooling, private, and public schooling for her three sons.
Supporting Veterans
Oates, whose husband is an Air Force veteran, underscored the importance of retaining veterans in Virginia. She highlighted the success of initiatives like the HIVE in Winchester, which offers support for veterans transitioning to civilian careers.
She also recounted her advocacy for reinstating funding for the Gold Star Tuition Program, which provides education benefits to families of service members killed or disabled in the line of duty.
Protecting Virginia’s Constitution
A key topic of concern was a proposed constitutional amendment to enshrine abortion rights in Virginia’s Constitution. Oates criticized the amendment for including provisions allowing late-term abortions with reduced oversight. “I will vehemently oppose this bill,” Oates declared, urging constituents to spread awareness and engage in the legislative process.
Rural Development and Community Needs
Oates highlighted her work on securing funding for local projects, such as repairing historic structures in Clarke County. She also discussed ongoing efforts to address water issues affecting the Shenandoah River region through regional planning and resource management.
Connecting with Constituents
The evening ended with Oates encouraging open communication. She invited attendees to contact her office with legislative concerns, schedule Capitol visits, or discuss issues over coffee at local shops.
The upcoming legislative session begins January 10, and Oates reaffirmed her commitment to advocating for her district’s needs.
