Teen Advocate Raises Awareness for MADD with Passion and Dedication

Published

on

In a heartfelt interview, James Campola, a 15-year-old advocate, and his mother, Beth, shared their volunteer journey for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). Over the past year, the mother-son duo has participated in multiple walks across the U.S., raising awareness and funds for the fight against impaired driving.

Walking Together for Change

Beth discovered MADD through a Facebook post promoting a local awareness walk earlier this year. That initial event sparked a commitment, leading the pair to join walks in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and even as far as Beaumont, Texas. Together, they raised $700 in donations through family and community support.

James shared that his involvement stems from a passion for advocacy. “Drunk driving is completely preventable, yet it harms so many people,” he said. His walks with MADD have strengthened his resolve to make a difference, giving him a unique perspective on community action.

Bonding Through Advocacy

The duo emphasizes the personal rewards of their shared mission. “It’s an enjoyable way for us to spend time together while helping others,” Beth said. Their travels and experiences have built strong memories they’ll cherish for years.

The strong bond between the two was emphasized as a rare and admirable combination of a teenager’s dedication and a close relationship with their parent.

Learning Through Service

James’s passion for service extends beyond MADD. Earlier this year, he participated in Virginia’s House of Delegates Page Program, where he spent nine weeks assisting lawmakers in Richmond. That experience deepened his understanding of advocacy and policy-making, fueling his commitment to causes like MADD.

“It taught me a lot about organizing, community engagement, and standing up for what’s right,” James explained. He envisions a future in law or public service, with plans to advocate for stricter impaired driving laws.

Looking to the Future

In 2025, the Campolas hope to expand their efforts by participating in more walks. James also aims to engage in court advocacy, ensuring impaired driving laws are both enforced and strengthened.

As James approaches the milestone of getting his driver’s license, he’s more determined than ever to promote safe driving practices. Beth expressed pride in her son’s commitment. “He’s not just advocating; he’s learning to be a responsible member of society,” she said.

Join the Mission

The Campolas continue to accept donations for MADD, with details available on their Walk Like MADD Facebook page. Upcoming events for 2025 will soon be announced, starting with walks in Florida this March.

Their story reminds us how one family’s dedication can make a difference in the fight against impaired driving.
