Rotary Club of Front Royal Launches Weekend Meal Bag Program to Combat Food Insecurity

Published

on

In a thoughtful response to the rising issue of food insecurity, the Rotary Club of Front Royal has initiated a Weekend Meal Bag Program. This innovative project, funded through a District Grant in collaboration with Rotary District 7570, aims to provide much-needed meals to individuals who might otherwise go hungry during the weekends.

Addressing a Growing Need

The idea for the program was inspired by alarming statistics from Dinner Together, a local meal service. In April 2024, the number of guests seeking meals from the organization increased significantly, rising from an average of 50 to 75 individuals per night. This increase highlighted a critical gap: while meals were provided Monday through Thursday, many community members faced uncertainty about food on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Lynn Downs, a local advocate for food security, approached the Rotary Club with a solution: a pilot project similar to the school-based Backpack Buddies program. Instead of backpacks, guests would receive a reusable tote bag filled with three quick and easy dinners that required no cooking, as well as a water bottle. Guests could return the bag every Thursday to refill it with new meals for the weekend.

Funding the Vision

When Rotary Club President Holly Rhodenhizer learned about this opportunity, she knew it was the right direction for the club’s 2024 District Grant. While her initial plan was to support a local park project inspired by her love of hiking, the urgency of addressing food insecurity in the community took precedence.

In May 2024, the Rotary Club of Front Royal applied for the grant. By June, they received approval for $8,000 in total funding—$4,000 from the Rotary Club and $4,000 in matching funds from Rotary District 7570. The funds were distributed in September 2024, and the program launched shortly thereafter.

Making an Impact

Although numbers are currently lower than anticipated due to the HARTS program being in session, the Rotary Club expects demand for weekend meal bags to increase significantly once HARTS concludes for the year. This initiative will then play a crucial role in bridging the gap for those relying on Dinner Together for their weekday meals.

The Weekend Meal Bag Program exemplifies the Rotary Club of Front Royal’s commitment to addressing food insecurity with thoughtful, community-driven solutions. Through this project, the club is not only filling bellies but also fostering hope and resilience among its neighbors in need.
