Treasure in the Attic: Forgotten Comic Sells for Record-Breaking $9.12 Million

Three brothers in San Francisco thought they were simply cleaning out their late mother’s attic. What they found instead was a life-changing surprise—one that turned a family legend into a multimillion-dollar reality.

The men, who have asked to remain anonymous, were sorting through old boxes in the home where they grew up. Their mother had passed away earlier that year, and they were preparing the house for sale. They expected to find the usual items: faded photo albums, yellowing newspapers, maybe some keepsakes.

But then they found the box.

It looked like nothing special at first—just a simple cardboard container filled with old newspaper clippings, loose papers, and odds and ends from decades past. One of the brothers was about to toss it in the dumpster when he paused. Something inside caught his eye: a stack of colorful, neatly preserved comic books.

The family had heard stories growing up. Their mother had once mentioned owning rare comics, including a Superman issue from the early days. But she could never remember where they ended up, and over the years, the brothers had written it off as just a fun piece of family lore.

“We honestly thought she had imagined it or sold them long ago,” one of the brothers told a family friend, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “We had no idea they were still in the house.”

As they looked closer, they realized this wasn’t just any comic collection. Tucked neatly among the pages was a copy of Superman No. 1, first published in 1939. Even more amazing: the comic was in pristine condition—a rarity for a book that old, especially one that had been sitting in an attic for decades.

Superman No. 1 is one of the most sought-after comic books in the world. It features the Man of Steel’s first full-length solo story and helped launch the superhero genre. Copies in any condition are valuable, but near-perfect editions are almost never found outside of museums or private collections.

Comic book experts quickly confirmed the find and authenticated the copy. Then, in October 2025, the brothers put the comic up for auction.

The final sale price? $9.12 million—the highest amount ever paid for a single comic book.

The previous record was held by a copy of Action Comics No. 1, the first appearance of Superman, which sold for $3.25 million in 2021. But this discovery more than doubled that figure, making history in the world of comic collecting.

The buyer has not been publicly named but is believed to be a private collector.

Comic historian Julie Martinez said the condition of the Superman comic was what set it apart. “It’s incredibly rare to find a 1939 comic book in this shape,” she said. “The colors were bright, the pages were crisp, and the spine was almost untouched. It was as if someone had put it straight into a time capsule.”

For the brothers, the discovery was both emotional and unbelievable. Their mother, who had bought the comic for just 10 cents, had always loved Superman as a symbol of hope and fairness.

“It was like she left us a final gift,” one of the brothers said. “We never imagined it would be worth this much, but we’re grateful. And we think she would’ve gotten a big laugh out of it.”

While the money will be split between them, the brothers say they plan to donate a portion to causes their mother cared about, including literacy programs and children’s charities.

The rest of the attic was cleared out in the following weeks, but nothing else compared to that one small box that nearly ended up in the trash—a box that held a piece of history, and a story they’ll never forget.
