Space Heater Safety 101

Published

on

Fire Prevention Week (FPW) runs from October 6 to 12, with this year’s theme being “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!™.” It’s an ideal time to refresh your fire safety knowledge, especially if you use a space heater for extra warmth. Here are ten essential tips to help you use your space heater safely:

1. Place the Heater on a Safe Surface

Always set your space heater on a solid, level, non-flammable surface. Avoid placing it on carpets, tables, or furniture that could catch fire or tip over.

2. Maintain a Safe Distance

Keep your space heater at least three feet away from combustible materials, such as bedding, curtains, or furniture.

3. Avoid High-Traffic Areas

Ensure your space heater is not in a high-traffic area or doorway that could pose a tripping hazard.

4. Check for Damage

Inspect the space heater for damaged cords or plugs before each use. If you notice fraying or other damage, do not use the heater.

5. Keep Away from Flammable Materials

Never use a space heater in a workshop, garage, or near flammable materials like paint, gas cans, or matches.

6. Regular Cleaning

Regularly clean your space heater to remove dust and debris, which could catch fire if the heat ignites.

7. Never Leave Unattended

Never leave a space heater unattended. Always turn it off when you leave the room or go to bed.

8. Plug Directly into a Wall Outlet

Plug your space heater directly into a wall outlet—avoid using extension cords or power strips. Do not plug other electrical devices into the same outlet as the heater to prevent overloads.

9. Follow the Manufacturer’s Instructions

Read and follow the manufacturer’s manual to ensure you adhere to all safety instructions for your heater model.

10. Install and Test Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors near where you use the space heater and test them at least once a month. These detectors provide early warnings in case of a fire or carbon monoxide leak related to the heater.

Additional Safety Measure

Consider purchasing a space heater with an automatic shut-off feature that activates if the unit tips over or overheats. This added safety feature can help prevent accidents and reduce the risk of fire or burns.

Stay safe and warm this winter by following these essential tips!
