County honors service of retiring VDOT official Cliff Balderson

On May 1, the Warren County Board of Supervisors and administrative staff acknowledged the pending retirement of Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Edinburg Residency Administrator Cliff Balderson.

Some of Balderson’s VDOT colleagues got a laugh when County Administrator Doug Stanley tried to tack a few additional years onto that service – NO Doug, not SINCE 1933 – rather since 1980 for over 37 years of service to VDOT.

But when the laughter subsided the resolution read into the record verified those correct numbers, including the past seven years at the Edinburg Residency bringing him more directly into supervision of the county’s road and transportation infrastructure.

VDOT colleagues react to county administrator’s time warp reference to Balderson’s service beginning in 1933 – Geez Doug, that would put him on the job for 85 years – he sure is holding his age well…

“The Warren County Board of Supervisors holds Mr. Balderson in high esteem as a person who has repeatedly demonstrated his support for the maintenance and improvements to the transportation system of Warren County and has gone out of his way to assist Board members, staff and citizens of Warren County during his tenure in the region,” the resolution states.

The resolution also noted VDOT’s Edinburg Residency’s oversight of Warren, Shenandoah, Clarke and Frederick Counties; as well as Balderson’s “dedication and integrity” in oversight of county projects, “including but not limited to: replacement of the South Fork, Morgan Ford, Indian Hollow and Gooney Run Bridges, and the improvements to Blue Mountain Road”.

Farewell old friend of Warren County; but one final thought, Cliff – maybe you can get those South Fork and Morgan Ford Bridge contractors to rip the rest of those shredding taped lane line markers up and replace them the old-fashioned way – with PAINT – before your retirement goes into effect May 14 – think?
