From Hunger to Hope: How Dinner Together is Making a Difference

Published

on

In the heart of Warren County, Dinner Together has become a cornerstone of community care, providing over 300 hot meals each week to neighbors in need. This low-barrier program, supported by over a dozen churches and civic organizations, ensures that no one in Front Royal goes hungry.

Led by First Baptist Church (FBC), Good Shepherd Evangelical Lutheran Church (GSELC), Calvary Episcopal Church (CEC), and Front Royal Presbyterian Church (FRPC), Dinner Together operates out of First Baptist Church’s commercial kitchen and fellowship hall. Carryout meals are served Monday through Thursday evenings, with more than 60 meals delivered weekly to homebound neighbors within a three-mile radius of downtown.

Community Care in Action
“Dinner Together is about more than just food,” says the nonprofit’s president, Lynn Downs. “It’s about meeting people where they are and offering them support without judgment.”

The organization was born out of necessity during the COVID-19 pandemic. It adapted the long-standing tradition of church-based community meals into a centralized, takeout-focused program. This model helped maintain service during a public health crisis and paved the way for future growth.

With the support of volunteers and donors, Dinner Together is now expanding its efforts. Plans are underway to serve meals seven days a week, with the addition of takeout bags on Thursdays that provide extra food and reusable water bottles to carry families through the weekend.

Volunteer Opportunities Abound
Dinner Together thrives on community involvement and seeks new volunteers and partner organizations. Preparing and serving meals has become a popular team-building activity for local businesses and groups.

“If you’re not part of an organization, that’s okay,” Downs says. “We’ll connect you with a team that could use an extra hand. Even a few hours a month can make a big difference.”

How to Donate
In addition to volunteering, the community can support Dinner Together through monetary donations. Contributions help fund balanced, healthy meals for individuals and families and supplies for homebound delivery.

  • In Person: Visit First Baptist Church at 14 W. 1st Street, Front Royal, VA, Monday through Wednesday and Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Why It Matters
Dinner Together serves a population that includes families, seniors, and individuals struggling with financial instability. Many working families need a helping hand to stretch resources at the end of the month. Others are homebound neighbors who rely on the program’s meal delivery services to stay nourished.

By providing this lifeline, Dinner Together strengthens Warren County’s fabric, showing that everyone benefits when a community comes together.
