Selah Theatre Project Presents “The Diviners” by Jim Leonard, Jr., in Middletown, VA

The Selah Theatre Project, partnering with Laurel Ridge Community College and the 2 for 2 Foundation, proudly announces its upcoming production of The Diviners, a captivating drama by Jim Leonard, Jr. Set to run from November 15 to November 24, this production brings to the stage a compelling story about faith, healing, and the resilience of the human spirit. Audiences are invited to witness this thought-provoking play at Selah Theatre, where community collaboration and powerful storytelling come together.

About The Diviners

Set in the 1930s, The Diviners unfolds in the fictional town of Zion, Indiana, a place marked by hardship and hope. Buddy Layman is at the story’s heart, a young boy gifted with the unique ability to find water but also harbors a deep, paralyzing fear of it due to a traumatic past. This play explores Buddy’s journey as he navigates his fears, grapples with his past, and seeks healing with the help of C.C. Showers, a disillusioned preacher who arrives in Zion searching for a fresh start.

The Diviners delves into themes of redemption, community, and compassion. The character of Buddy addresses the often-difficult intersection of faith and personal fear. At the same time, the arrival of C.C. Showers, who is both skeptical and compassionate, brings a new perspective to Zion. In Leonard’s hands, the play resonates as an exploration of human connection and our shared struggles, making it a relevant and cherished piece in contemporary American theater.

The Storyline

C.C. Showers, who has walked away from his family’s preaching tradition, hopes to lead a simpler life when he arrives in Zion. As he finds work and lodging with Ferris Layman, a mechanic and widower, he quickly encounters the varied personalities of Zion’s residents, who range from curious to zealous in their hopes for a revival of the church. Despite his insistence that he is done with preaching, the community begins to view him as a potential spiritual leader.

Showers, however, is more interested in connecting with Buddy, Ferris’s son. Buddy’s odd gift for “water witching”—or divining wells—fascinates the preacher, even as he sees how Buddy’s aversion to water keeps him isolated. Showers tries to bring Buddy peace in his own way, eventually attempting to bridge Buddy’s fear through a simple bath. Yet, this act carries unanticipated weight as the town’s expectations for a “baptism” add pressure to the moment, and tragedy unfolds.

Director’s Vision

Director Bleu Do’zia believes that The Diviners speaks powerfully to today’s audience. “This play resonates deeply with themes of hope, healing, and the search for meaning, which are particularly poignant in today’s world,” Do’zia said. “Our cast and crew have poured their hearts into this production, and we can’t wait to share it with our audience.”

Community Partnerships

This production is supported by Laurel Ridge Community College and the 2 for 2 Foundation, both dedicated to community enrichment and educational advancement. Joanna Schilling of Selah Theatre Project expressed gratitude for these partnerships. “We are honored to partner with these esteemed organizations,” she noted. “Their commitment to the arts and community enrichment aligns perfectly with our mission to provide high-quality theatrical experiences and educational opportunities.”

The partnership with the 2 for 2 Foundation is particularly meaningful for this production. The foundation’s focus on youth swimming education highlights the importance of water safety and skill-building, themes that are subtly woven throughout The Diviners.
