Governor Youngkin Celebrates Heroes at 2023 Governor’s Fire Service Awards

In a heartwarming ceremony held at the Virginia Fire Chiefs Association Expo and Symposium in Virginia Beach, Governor Glenn Youngkin took the opportunity to honor the extraordinary individuals who have made significant contributions to Virginia’s fire services. The 2023 Governor’s Fire Service Awards, a tradition established in 2002, serves as a platform to recognize Virginia’s fire service personnel’s bravery, dedication, and selfless acts.

Governor Youngkin, alongside Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Terry Cole, expressed deep gratitude and admiration for the award recipients. In his speech, Youngkin highlighted the critical role of these first responders and support staff in safeguarding the community, particularly in times of crisis and tragedy. “We are grateful for these fearless heroes who run towards danger to protect and serve their fellow Virginians every day,” Youngkin stated, acknowledging their invaluable service to the Commonwealth.

Brad Creasy, the Executive Director of the Virginia Department of Fire Programs, also echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the courage and commitment of these individuals. Creasy praised the award recipients for their acts of bravery and their dedication to saving lives, often at great personal risk.

One standout recipient of the 2023 awards is Adam Still from Winchester Fire and Rescue. Still has been instrumental in adapting to challenges faced by the department, such as a decrease in experienced hires, by facilitating in-house recruit classes for all certifications. His involvement doesn’t stop there; He has also played a key role in the development of the active assailant program, mass casualty incident training, and first aid/CPR courses. His dedication to both teaching and the operational aspects of fire service exemplifies the kind of commitment and excellence that the Governor’s Fire Service Awards seek to honor.
